(Until I fix it), I consider the lag part of experience. You know, reality needs to keep up with what just happened, because it was mindblowing. :)

Great job. To get rid out of a lag try making a scope (ask MyCresta), so when things are zoom in the shot will look better and the lag will feel natural.

Part of the fault for the performance is lack of particle system. I had to create my own and use Sprites instead, which are, as Dennis says, not optimized for this kind of usage. But that's the smaller part.
Apparently, the hole creation algorithm needs to be a bit tuned not to create that many new particles, or the destruction needs to be distributed over consecutive frames/physics ticks.
The tuning will hopefully result in bigger chunks, which I actually want, because then I can also apply force to and make it spew big chunks of concrete/wood/whatever into the direction of projectile.

this rail gun is really good...... at bringing my fps down to 0 for a sec. I have an i76700k so that is at thing, really cool concept tho. If you maybe optimised the gun that would be great, maybe the particles should be turned down with distance from shot?

@Paril Hmm, didn't notice that he fired twice... but yeah, it's more like a "warm-up" sound before shot (sound/gladiator/railgun.wav). The recharge one was present in Q3 from what I see. There is also "railgun hum" which I never noticed. Need to replay later stages of Q2 with headphones on...

As a Q2 afficionado, I'll explain the confusion with the recharge sound:
The Gladiator had a long-ish "warm-up" on his railgun, which had a slight pause and then a rail sound at the end. The game, however, plays the regular railgun fire sound on his muzzleflash, so he ends up playing the firing sound twice (one in his charge-up audio and one from his muzzleflash). I can see how one might confuse that for a re-charge sound.

The sound clip with recharging was used by a Railgun-equipped Gladiator monster, mostly to warn you that you're about to be killed.
