Pretty sure someone is making a mod that would allow you to customize your AV again, called Better NS2 (work in progress so cant be used in whitelisted servers atm tho)

Theres a bit of pop in when you're very close to an object, here's a screenshot of a skulk's head bursting thru the vision
I've noticed it happening to extractors and stuff too
