Because it has a very wide brim, it could feasibly catch downward strikes aimed for the chest or arms.

The character in the stats screenshots is wearing the Heavy Coat from the Dread Gear mod and plated tabi boots from Omo's Armour for the World, and the thumbnail character is wearing the Wanderer's Tabard, also from Omo's Armour for the World.
