I love how several people have commented with completely different explanations for the nose's function.

@STANAG, the noze is the exhail valve I believe "flutter type" I beleive. Some early gasmasks (ww2 and older) often lacked an exhail valve. So upon exhailing, the air would come out the sides of the mask, tampering the seal.
