when installing mods make sure the gamedata is 1 level away from the custom folder.
example is custom/mymod/modfiles modfiles is where the maps,materils and other such files go.

you know it's funny you say that, I was looking into a way to replace black mesa's font files with the mod version. Doing the same with HL1's font would be pretty interesting, but likely wouldn't look good without tweaking
