The inconsistency in toughness of large-grid components compared to small-grid components is frustrating. I've run small-grid mining ships at 100 m/s into rock walls without sustaining any damage. Kids, don't try that with a large-grid miner!

Yeah I also fixed that in a mod. Most things are too fragile in vanilla across the board, in my opinion. And large grid H2 does not really do well for precision driving lol

It does gather ore quickly, that's for sure. The downside is that I've noticed that the large-grid components on this ship (especially conveyors) *seem* to be much more fragile than they used to be. I've found that if I bump the front of the ship too hard to the side (and it doesn't take much),l then I've got to repair a bunch of failed components. I don't find the same problem with my small-grid designs; hence, my main reason for mostly using small-grid miners.

In vanilla*

Thanks autocorrect, for making me insult myself.

I’m Vanilla, you’re right. I run efficient H2 thrusters, bigger drill radius, and Pt on Mars only. The H2 version of this is an absolute workhorse for me.

I should've offered that version, too. I figured people would be pretty far along in the game if they were going to build and use this. I rarely build it anymore because I prefer my small-grid miners.

Three years later....

I also made a H2 conversion of this, just so I could get it earlier. Getting enough Pt takes a while, depending on how you roll.

If that's what makes your boat float, that's OK with me.

i forgot to make an bp of it

i converted this one to hydro it whas little bigger but with enough trusters whas easy to fly full

For what purpose? It'l going to be wa-a-a-a-y too heavy to fly in a planet's or moon's gravity well, and hydrogen thrusters have far too much overhead (i.e., hydrogen tank and extra ice storage) to operate efficiently in space. Yeah, it would eliminate the need for some of the power that the reactors provide, but the jump drive itself requires a massive amount of power to charge, so batteries alone won't work well and you'll need to supplement their power with a hydrogen engine or two (which correspondingly consumes a massive amount of ice, too, to operate). In my opinion, ion engines are the best bet for a space-only ship.

maybe an idea to make this one hydrogen

HAHAHA...yeah...I test them pretty hard, but that doesn't mean that I didn't miss something. The original Dirty Ore was one of my earliest shared blueprints and I did a heckuva lot of mining with that sucker (back then I only played in survival mode, and everything I did was built that way). This version increases the number of drills from 9 to 25, and adds a second large cargo container. It's a little underpowered when it's full, but is of little consequence given that it has a jump drive. The original also had the same mudflaps, but no "art" for its name. I figured the mudflap girl would be a nice touch.

LoL, you're priceless Spiff, from the dirty ore art to the high quality back off "mud flap" art in the back this thing is cool. Best part is, knowing you, it probably works perfectly. I'll try it out, but I'm sure you've already tested the crap out of it so I bet the "this thing is cool" part of my comment won't change.
