Well, you're partially right: all DLC maps, some gear, some vehicles, and some factions require buying the DLC if you wanna make missions or play the campaigns.
^ Armed Assault Wiki (https://armedassault.fandom.com) calls those *premium content*, and it's the place to check which stuff requires it.
^ Whereas the official compatibility mods will allow you to
1) play pre-existing multiplayer missions.
2) check the stuff out in BI/ACE arsenal.
^ But, seriously, next time the official DLC's get on sale, paying 40-50USD is worth it, you'd normally pay like 150-200 for them. Not to mention another for all the cDLC's.
