Using ESRGAN with Manga109 would probably produce much better results that what is seen here, this looks like an effort with early image models.

you dont do that, just add them all in one singular folder (or many if you want) name them whatever and leave them in the custom folder, the game should override the base game with the ones you have in the custom folder if your folder structure is correct and the .vmt names and paths are also correct
if you're only changing the diffuse map, there's no reason for you to fiddle with the .vmts, just leave the upscaled .vtfs like i've said above and it should work
it doesn't have to be packaged in a .vpk to work, unless you're planning to turn it into a package people can download

@3kliksphilip Holy shit, thanks man. One more thing: so in half life 2's game files the .vtf and .vmt files are kept in separate .vpk files. The way I've been adding the textures into the game has been by just dropping the .vpk's into the custom folder. When I change all of these .vmt files, should I put them into seperate .vpk files like the game does or can they all go into one like they did in Half life 2 Update's game files?

I do know what I'm talking about ,your normal maps are creating another layer of bump mapping that adds on top of the upscaled textures that makes it looks like a huge sharpen filter even more, no 3D artist that has respect for themselves would generate normals from a diffuse.

if you need a normal map just put in 128 128 255 it's literally less work than uploading the mats to some site then waiting for them to churn out "normal maps" which I'm assuming you are doing if you're not using xNormal.

Hey, so I went ahead and extracted all of half life 2's textures, converted the .vtfs to .pngs and upscaled all of them 4x what they used to be (with the average resolution going from 512x512 to 2048x2048,) converted them back to .vtf files and repacked them into a .vpk. Now, something I realized about halfway through doing this was that it would be entirely possible that when I loaded in these huge ass textures in game, they would show as being absolutely huge and smeared all over the place, but I ignored this rational thought and finished my project. Of course, this is exactly what happened. Is the only way to fix this by editing every single texture on every single wall in every single half life 2 map in hammer editor? Or is there some sort of magic (through the console or maybe through .vmt files) that can fix this problem?

Rymd's jumping to assumptions about stuff he doesn't understand. Simply by disabling normalmaps he would have seen the affect was from the AI upscaling and not the applied bumpmaps.
