It is what happens when you use horses for transport. Oh, and btw, most people hadn't access to showers or baths, or any running water, so people had very strong body odour. They stank. Their undergarments could be cleaned thoroughly but unless you were rich, with servants, your outer garments if you were male got little more than a sponging. You couldn't pop your suit into the dry cleaners.
