Good tutorial!

Yeaah, you. I've seen your work. And so has a fellow mapper friend of mine.
I'd rate your maps, on a scale of 1 to 10, a -5. Sloppy, unaligned and improperly chosen textures, and you can't even do a Minecraft-type map right; import the textures and get the scaling right. You clearly have not abided by the aesthetic rule, in that if the aesthetics are not pleasing to the refined eye, don't release it.
gamingdominari 29. jan. 2014 kl. 8:14
i made some hammer maps. Look at my workshop.
Anachronistic ALLOS  [ophavsmand] 28. jan. 2014 kl. 20:00
In your Steam window, go to the Tools tab and look for the Portal 2 Authoring Tools. I believe that's where it was; and be ABSOLUTELY SURE to follow this tutorial: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Level_Design_Introduction_(Portal_2)/Getting_Started

Don't release ANYTHING until it's near bug-free and has pleasing aesthetics. Otherwise the disapproval of many professional mappers will be upon your work.

How do you get hammer to make these maps? There really cool and i would love to make one like this.
gamingdominari 29. dec. 2013 kl. 16:20
Eh, can you look at my test chambers?

I suck at making maps... I tried and tried. But I can't figure it out. I saw a 5 year old do it and I can't even make a pixel.
Anachronistic ALLOS  [ophavsmand] 28. dec. 2013 kl. 19:56
Be sure to get some peer reviews on it before even thinking about THINKING about releasing it. Because I warn you, stranger, that if you don't, there's a chance harsh reviews will rain down upon you like a heavy storm. That is, if the veteran mapmakers see it. Anyone who hails from the PTI Editor will likely shower you with applause no matter the quality of the map. As the Announcer says, please disregard any undeserved compliments.
gamingdominari 28. dec. 2013 kl. 9:49
THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! Btw, I'm making my first hammer map.
Anachronistic ALLOS  [ophavsmand] 27. dec. 2013 kl. 17:27
All right, a happy customer! Finally! It's nice to see community approval on this series.
I should really get back to working on Pt. 3...
gamingdominari 27. dec. 2013 kl. 16:55
Thanks, I need to show this to my friend. He has never played portal. Ever.

true true

Internet tutorials are a thing.
Wet For Jesus 26. nov. 2013 kl. 12:27
i got it recently and i don't even know how to do a thing on it
Wet For Jesus 26. nov. 2013 kl. 12:27
The hammer is really hard to use
Wet For Jesus 26. nov. 2013 kl. 12:26
Thx
Anachronistic ALLOS  [ophavsmand] 26. nov. 2013 kl. 0:20
Yes. Though it's just commonly known as Hammer.

If you want some real, good-quality maps, Hammer's the way to go.
The PTI editor is just a grid-based clean-themed chamber maker, which is quite dull.
Wet For Jesus 25. nov. 2013 kl. 21:19
Did you use portal 2 SDK hammer editor/builder?
The Sojourner 16. sep. 2013 kl. 23:07
BTW I'm not saying your series is bad...
The Sojourner 16. sep. 2013 kl. 23:05
Definitely more compact than Valve's maps (which means a faster learning curve): portals, portal momentum, and the classic cube-and-button mechanic all in one. I understand your point, but keep in mind that some people don't learn fast, and that's why Valve stretched the Portal 2 mechanics out to over 80 maps (plus there was a story to tell).
Snarplord XVI 10. juli 2013 kl. 6:35
Good job.
Anachronistic ALLOS  [ophavsmand] 9. juli 2013 kl. 14:08
The Jekku Test Pt. 1, as it currently is, uses the hole-in-the-ceiling thing and it looks pretty good. I may add more destruction to this particular map, in due time.
Nobody No-One 9. juli 2013 kl. 7:46
Although, I know you are not good with aesthetics.
Nobody No-One 9. juli 2013 kl. 7:45
Well, to be honest, this does not look like the emergency is potentially apocalyptic, as it is just dirty walls. There should possibly be holes in the ceiling.
UMNSE 7. juli 2013 kl. 14:28
I posted some screenshots detailing a few things that need to get fixed Screenshots
PlanetAlexanderProjects 9. juni 2013 kl. 22:21
Great Job! This is a better explination then the first game itself. Well done
Anachronistic ALLOS  [ophavsmand] 9. juni 2013 kl. 2:32
Gels and lasers won't be in the same part, I'll tell you that much.
redninja8227 8. juni 2013 kl. 18:00
i think it is good traning for beginers. in the next one use gels and lasers
Nobody No-One 6. juni 2013 kl. 18:04
Thumbs up.
Nobody No-One 6. juni 2013 kl. 18:04
I know this is clean style, but the aesthetics are not that good, if you look at the WibiData mod chambers 4 and 5 they have an absolutely perfect and goodlooking clean style, maybe use that as a model (P.S. use glados also)
Just a thought.
I want to see the next few maps...
Anachronistic ALLOS  [ophavsmand] 6. juni 2013 kl. 15:39
I'll try it, but I'll probably get stuck as always.
wildgoosespeeder 6. juni 2013 kl. 13:48
I'm agreeing with Lpfreaky90, BIG TIME. She knows her Portal because she maps quite often and knows the common mistakes that people make, even more so than me.

Try my map?

exit elevator lol
EOTeal 6. juni 2013 kl. 1:57
Its good for the new portal players
icee 5. juni 2013 kl. 18:13
Lpfreaky90, I appreciate your opinion, but don't bash him. He did his best. That's completely fine for my biologically and genetically related father. He wouldn't understand the campaign at all. I want to get him trained before he does the real thing. This is good enough. Stop bashing ALLOS. I'm out.
Anachronistic ALLOS  [ophavsmand] 5. juni 2013 kl. 16:51
@Redthirst and Lpfreaky90: Well, the friend who asked for this wanted it because they thought that the main single player campaign was a bit much. As for the lift thing, well, sometimes I just take shortcuts when I can't remember some things.
Laerin 5. juni 2013 kl. 11:06
I agree with Lpfreaky90, if someone wants to learn how to play Portal, they shoult play single player campaing. Anyways, good for you, but this map is awful and i don't understand why i got this when searching for "Most popular". Who are those guys that give you a thumbs up?
🍪 Anna 5. juni 2013 kl. 4:52
I get the point, don't worry.

The problem is that a bunch of points are legit feedback and they get pointed out as not being a problem. I'm an experienced hammer mapper and I'm just trying to hand you points which you can use to improve your mapping skills. If you want to get better at hammer it's important that you look critically to your own designs and listen carefully to feedback.

I am currently running a closed beta for my mod where some people play my maps and look at it critically. In the 15 maps about 300 tiny issues were found. This can be texture alignments; models that were floating, an unintended solution and whatnot. I could say to all these points; meh, only minor points, but I would release a mod with 300 issues.

Instead I carefully note down all their feedback and fix the issues as soon as they're done playtesting. The next playtester will get a much better experience.

- I think that most people, dad or not, will notice a strange white glow in an elevator.
- I know it's designed to be simple, I think I haven't been too harsh here. I just say that the best way to teach one to play portal is to play the campaign.
- why do you use that lift?, the default instance is better looking in my opinion.
- I get your point with the x's
- Well I would've fancied something to look at in that minute I had to spent in the first room just derping about whilst the text was playing (ps: use scenes here instead of ambient_generics; that'll also give subtitles!
- It's a glitch indeed, deal with it indeed, go fix it! glitches aren't supposed to be in maps! :)

I am being crical to help you see some flaws in your maps that can be fairly easily fixed. This will make this map better and hopefully you've learned something from it which can make your next map even better!
Anachronistic ALLOS  [ophavsmand] 5. juni 2013 kl. 0:23
- Firstly. This was made for a friend's dad. Do you expect every parent to be tech-savvy enough to know this stuff?
- Secondly. It's meant to be a very simple test. Emphasis on SIMPLE.
- The elevators have no movies on purpose. Because they are simplified models I use that just consist of the func_details and the turbine props.
- The X's are loose placement guides. Freelancing a little.
- You don't need an info sign for something this simple.
- It's a glitch. Deal with it.

- Overall, don't be a bloody critic if you completely miss the point.
🍪 Anna 4. juni 2013 kl. 19:56
Seriously?! HOW did THIS get ANY thumbs up?

If a friends asks how to play portal?
Put them behind your computer and don't let them go until they finished the entire portal 2 game.

I played with sound off and I waited a long time before the freaking door opened, no idea why.

As for the mapping;
-it doesn't look like a full compile
- there are some cubemap issues
- the elevator movies are broken
- there are x's but no placement helpers there.
- there is no info sign
- the exit elevator is non-solid?!

etc etc etc... all in all a bad map, regardless of the audience you're aiming at. Sorry thumbs down
Manifest Breastiny 4. juni 2013 kl. 16:26
Ah, I see.
Anachronistic ALLOS  [ophavsmand] 4. juni 2013 kl. 16:10
@AD_79 [Blue and Bluer]: Well, a friend asked me to do this. iCeeYouCee, to be exact. They wanted a tutorial other than the main game. So, I just made a simple tutorial map. Most helpful if you have someone with you who has played the games before. And to be honest, we're teaching someone's dad here. Parents aren't always too tech savvy, amiright? So, you've completely missed the bloody point of it all. And just be happy that for once in Hammer I've made an original test chamber that looks more official than something like the Mad Test Room maps.
Manifest Breastiny 4. juni 2013 kl. 16:04
You would think by now most people would know how to play the game. And if they don't, they can play the bloody single player. Also, the mapping here was below average. Sorry, but thumbs down.
icee 4. juni 2013 kl. 9:08
Thanks. Really helped. :)
Tomki 4. juni 2013 kl. 2:50
Good map. I found bug with elevaton.
1. I go to elevaton
2. I stay on elevaton, not in elevaton
xD

5/5 rate map :)
Thomas 3. juni 2013 kl. 17:56
nice.
