Thanks for the link, too, and for mentioning BEE2. I've played around a little bit with the official Portal 2 tool, but didn't get very far. I'll be sure to look into BEE2!
The panel retracted because of a trigger. Triggers work when you step into a certain area of the map, for example, when you portal into that small space and go through it, you also just went through a trigger, causing the panel to retract. I hope this page will explain what triggers are more clearly.
I was initially confused by the elevator and am still not sure which of my actions caused the panel at the top to retract.
