also make sure the vmt file for your custom textures is pointing to the correct directory.
i.e.
LightmappedGeneric
{
"$basetexture""mycustom/borgqueen"
"$Translucent""0"
"$decal" "1"

for example
then when you compile the those same textures need to be in the vpk materials directory.
to test you would take out the custom textures from your L4D2 directory and then run the map from your vpk
i usually make a "my custom" folder and put it within the L4D2 materials folder
Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\materials\mycustom
that way it's easy to take out-everything as it's in one place.
