@VastoDemon: For me it lifts of fine from the mars-planet. Put it in atmoshperic mode and hold the spacebar. With the amount and ratio of thrusters it should have relatively constant thrust below a certain altitude and more, when the ion thrusters start to get better.

Also the one reactor you can access from below is there to be able to put power to the ship in case it ran out. The rest of the reactors are connected and accessible via the connector taht is right beside the outside reactor.
