The guaranteed Shinigami will no longer spawn if you do not have enough Gold (The first one is still free as always). You will also receive a notification when a Shinigami spawns, telling you how much you spent, which is 200 on standard speed.

UA now increases Happiness, and guarantees you one Shinigami at any time during the game after researching Currency, but you lose Gold each time it spawns. Shinigami cost is increased, and Gold earned from its ability is decreased.
