Tips on getting better soldiers
By DerPazo
Here are some tips and tricks I remember from the last 20 years, when I played the game about soldier stats and on how to improve them right from the first contact on the field. If the game was only adapted to Steam engine and nothing else than the known graphic bug in the end missions (which could be solved by copying/overwriting some files) were removed. Then these tips should still work.

Best Psi soldiers
From what I remember, soldiers with best starting psi skills where soldiers with Spanish names (not sure if it was restricted to soldiers from South America). So these guys are also quite immune to or have a lower chance of being mind controlled right from the beginning.

You could thus go and dismiss every soldier not having a Spanish name and keep the others but at the beginning of the game, this would be too expensive for the money you have.
Improve time units
Every soldier using up time units for basic actions at least once per mission will get higher TUs for next mission. In fact I think it is only the first basic action that triggers it. The more actions you do has no effect on how many TUs you get.
Improve stamina
Whenever possible make your soldiers use up as many of their TUs running around. Their stamina will get much higher for the next mission.
Improve health
Well this one is a bit tricky, but every time your soldiers get hit and healed at the base their health bar increases.
What you can do is shot the trainees around the end of the mission with normal pistols as they deal less damage and the risk of killing them is lower. The next mission they can participate on they will have a much higher health.
Improve bravery
Every time morale of a soldier drops below 50 and he does not panick, he will gain more bravery at the end of the mission.
Improve reaction
Every time a soldier reacted to an enemy (e.g. reaction shot) he will gain more reaction points at the end of the mission.
Improve accuracy
The more often your soldiers hit, the better their accuracy skills get. You can thus get 100% hit chances on automatic shot by 'training' your soldiers.
If you have enough TUs to get close to an enemy not looking into your direction AND still be able to use automatic shot: get behind him and pump him full of bullets. In later missions I tend to give the trainees I take on missions normal rifles or pistols with plenty of ammo as they do less damage so they can shoot more often. As I said EVERY single hit makes them better.

A good strategy is to make a better (armoured) soldier trigger a reaction shot from the enemy so that the enemy has no TUs left. The trainee gets as close as possible and starts shooting. But make sure you can then either kill the enemy before the end of your turn with another soldier or MC him, so that he will not kill the trainee on next enemy's turn.
Improve throwing
Same as for shooting. The more you use it successfully the better you get.
Improve strength
To get soldiers that can carry whatever you want without losing stamina too fast. Cram your trainees inventory with as many items you can. They will be stronger next mission.
Improve Psi skills
As soon as you get MC use it as much as possible. Every use of it makes your psi skills get higher for the next fight.

There was def a stat, that usually indicated a good psi number..... I think it was bravery.... usually.

better to have a bad shot that is brave/high psi then a scared top shot

Nice advice! I don't like to cheese the game tho with "artificial" training :p

I have to agree that this is BS as that having tried to test this theory in-game, my stay with the sky ranger guy was the only one that did nothing and also the only one that improved any stat. only time I have found any improvements on any of my troops is when they get a promotion and what they receive seems to be completely arbitrary to what skills used, actions taken, or TU usage during missions. The Spanish names thing I keep seeing kind of every where so there seems to be something to this.

I do love the idea of a senior NCO lining up the troops and putting a 10 mm round in the lower torso of each rookie "to train their health".

You want better soldier's, keep them alive lol. It is dangerous early game to mess about training without save scumming. But even if fighting a very small ship, I would reckomeed using all your troops, to some degree. Also never use just the same few soldiers, instead rotate them so you have lots of good fighters, rather than eight hardcore ET killing MoFo's!!

I used to train my guys by mind contoling aliens, bringing them back to my ship for execution by trainee, if possible have one mind controled alien find another alien, mind control that one, and so on to get a group together, for mass execution.
