Yes, because of the additional population slots. There are many buffs that are either empire-wide or system-wide that apply a per-population benefit. As you move down the above image, you will unlock more population slots.

@Porcuspine Also a good number of upgrades also strangely apply on both sterile and fertile worlds.

@Porcuspine terraforming into less extreme planets usually adds some pop slots beside increased happiness. I usually turn all my lava and ash planets into deserts to keep the high industry from "on sterile" upgrades but to get more pops and less unhappiness. Though I haven't really run the math so I can't 100% guarantee that this is the optimal thing to do.

Is terraforming worth it if you can handle the negative opinion? Like, turning ice into boreal keeps 'cold' for research, but the planet-based research output goes down like -9 or something. Or like are the 'better' planets worth losing hot/sterile for production bonuses?

The note is partially incorrect. the Riftborn can only terraform "upward" instead, with their preference for sterile planets.
