Go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows Features On or Off.

Find "Legacy Components" in the list, and put a check box in "DirectPlay".

I'm on win 10, followed the directions exactly, but the box for DirectPlay was already checked. Still got the error at start up that it was unable to initialize graphics system. I'm able to run aoe2 just fine. I want to stress again, that I followed these directions EXACTLY, and comments like JakeTheGreensKeeper's don't help anybody still having issues.

I also am having this error. I am running the latest build of Windows 10 Pro, and have tried running Legacy Components, DirectX 3.5, Windows XP SP2 compatibility as administrator and moving required DLL from sysWOW64 to game directory.

Doesn't work, and yes I'm running Windows 10. No, I did not do something wrong, at least according to this "solution".

Well it didn't work for me. Even tried the GOG version and the result was the same. Followed every step and any possible solution I could think of. I guess the best option is to play in Windows XP through VirtualBox...

if you are on windows 10 it will work so ignore all the comments saying it didn't work they obviously did something wrong or are using an older version of windows.
