Issue Description
  • Many users report from day one that PREY stutters constantly whenever our character moves forward, moves between rooms or areas and whenever we discover new areas and we look around quickly.
  • The problem occurs in a variety of CPU / GPU configurations based on Intel / AMD / Nvidia chipsets which far exceed the recommended requirements of the game and when in game video settings are High or Maxed.
  • The problem is more evident and intense with Intel CPU & Nvidia GPU builts (especially in the middle / high-end of Pascal 10xx series).
  • The problem occurs independently if you are capping the frame rate in some way or you don't.
  • The problem seems to be related with texture streaming and LOD processes and with graphics drivers from both Nvidia (v382.05) and AMD.

Here is a video-analysis by BoostClock YouTube channel that shows important frame time spikes which is a valid indicator of probable Stuttering during our game experience:

I hope you can find this Guide useful and remember that all your endorsements, comments and reports are appreciated and welcome.
Users Tips and Workarounds
NVIDIA Users (Verified by me and other users)
  1. Roll back from Game Ready drivers v382.05 to v381.89. A clean installation via DDU uninstallation is recommended.
Result: The stuttering effect is almost completely eliminated and only minor stuttering remains when we discover some new areas / rooms.
  2. Roll back from your current installed Game Ready drivers version to v378.92. A clean installation through DDU uninstallation is recommended.
Result: The stuttering effect is reduced even a bit more than with 381.89 and only minor stuttering remains when we discover some new areas / rooms.
  3. If you prefer to stay in 382.05 drivers you can lower the in game 'Texture Quality' from Very High / High to Medium value.
Result: The stuttering is significantly reduced and minor stuttering remains when some new areas /rooms are discovered.
  4. If you prefer to stay in 382.05 keeping 'Texture Quality' at High / Very High value and you are @ 60 Hz you can set Adaptive sync mode via the Nvidia Control Panel with in game V-Sync Off.
Result: The stuttering almost completely disappear getting even less minor stuttering when some new areas /rooms are discovered but in return you will get occasional tearing when FPS drops in cetain areas below your screen refresh rate.

AMD users (Not verified, please let me know if you did)
  1. Find and install an AMD drivers version which reduce significantly or almost eliminate the stuttering issue.
  2. Lower the in game 'Texture Quality' from Very High / High to Medium value.
  3. If you use a 60 Hz display and you prefer to keep the in game 'Texture Quality' at Very High / High value you can set an adaptive sync mode via AMD drivers control program with in game V-Sync Off.

Current Official Information
By Bethesda Customer Support
I opened a Tech Support ticket[help.bethesda.net] reporting all this and asking for what they are doing to solve and fix properly this widespread issue and asking also for an official note to users on this concern.

This is basically what the Bethesda Customer Support replied to me on this regard:
  • We are investigating performance issues some player are having with the latest graphics card drivers.
  • We do not have any information about upcoming patches. If any information becomes available on upcoming updates or official patches, we will release it on the official website, Bethesda Blog, and at our official forums.
  • We can confirm that your information shared with us has been sent to the development team.
  • The best we can share with you is the relevant teams are investigating reports. We truly appreciate the information you have shared here and would like to remind you that though we are Customer Service, we cannot release information on what the Dev team is working on.
  • If standard troubleshooting, which you've seem to utilize exhaustively, does not improve performance we highly recommend noting these bugs on the forums, and any related information.

By Nvidia
Here[nvidia.custhelp.com] is what the NVIDIA Support department replied on how to fix the PREY stuttering up to now.

Basically they released 382.19 Hotfix drivers with just this realese note:

  • This hotfix resolves a stutter issue experienced on some configurations while playing Prey.

Nvidia released 382.33 driver version:
  • It is downloadable from here[www.geforce.com].
  • Release note on PREY stuttering issue:
[GeForce GTX 1080Ti][Prey 2]: Stuttering occurs during gameplay. [1902201]
  • 382.33 Test Results: After testing it intensely I found that it does not perform well in different game situations. Specifically, there are freezing and stuttering in intense combat situations, when discovering new areas/rooms and when the game auto-saves, as well as important FPS drops in certain maps.

No, they don't. This tips and workarounds are for the stuttering only. I think both performance issues are probably independent but I'm not sure. It seems there is something wrong on how the game manage the virtual memories (video and system) ... It is worth if you open a ticket with Bethesda Customer Support demanding a solution.

So does any of this fix the freezing issues that occur every 2-3 minutes too? Wasn't sure if it was related or not

Bethesda/Arkane should give us a game update focused on solving all the reported issues, like stuttering and freezes, they are quite late...
