Advanced stuff I'm still working on.
Trying to figure out the difference with the three types of wires I have.
There is double insulated wires and a heavy gauge wire. I got some installed in my electrical panels at the first two slots of each of the alpha and beta habs. Gamma has the heavier gauge stuff.
Testing to see if they last longer but since they are always in need of cleaning anyways I can't figure out which one is best to use where if anyone has ideas let me know.
I try and keep one tool in each hab when I have multiples otherwise all regular tools and light weight gear I keep on me.
A hammer, one razor blade, and the most common glue should be kept at each hab.
Carry the other tools around until you have extras then store the extras in the tools of habs.
Razors can be used to make fuses (takes two) but don't use them all up. Always keep one spare in each hab just in case (they are also cutting tools).
WEATHER STATIONS. (aka Way point stations)
These are also communication relay towers.
I try and make sure I have at least one fuse in them all. Lately, with an excess of fuses I have expanded this to two. This gave me a reason to revisit them and clean the sockets. Just make sure you turn the machine off as a precaution when putting new fuse in and turn it back ON before leaving.
They are all OFF at first. Turning them ON let's you know crap like Radiation storm events and dust storms.
Those are the basics.
Check your vitals so see if your food level is maxed. Don't waste food. Water is replaceable. Food seems limited or based on what you find in caches. Least for me so far.
Always get inside during a radiation storm. Hopefully, you have your machines going and it won't drain so bad.
Once you get your Rover (you can charge it with the batteries you carry)... you will be able to store: Circuit boards, Heating Elements, Carbon Filters, and Universal hoses in the back of it. Since you will be going back n forth to each hab with the Rover from that point on.
This will reduce your carrying weight.
Also you can store one of each (when you get more than 5 of each) into each hab as emergency backup... but really.... its best to keep all of those repair components INSIDE your rover. Because when you discover a 4th Hab (I haven't yet...) you may need those parts.
Also this keeps the habs from being cluttered up.
4. Electricity
It is important to get it going... for the Hab's sake and for nighttime use. They really should swap out the WIRE panel to the Heater and instead, have a battery capacity panel here. It would make sense.
But for now... here is what you need for this unit
Unit ON
3 Working fuses (really go for 5 here.. but try for 4 if you are strapped for fuses)
3 working wires (yet try for for 5).
1 circuit board (yeah it should work without one.. but this is the only case where even I say make dang sure this unit has a working circuit board otherwise those wires and fuses seem to fry out faster).
Make sure you turn the unit OFF before installing ANY new fuses, boards, or wires. They WILL zot-out right in front of you if you don't!
You do not have to repair the sockets until later. Just get the machines up so you can refill on air, water, and power first.
3.HEATER
This is the unit that keeps the water from freezing. Frozen water = No Oxygen and No drinking water. Also it means YOU freezing. All those things = Bad for you.
Heater doesn't have Carbon filters on the left side panel like Water and Oxygen. Instead it has 3 "Heating Elements". These are like MRE cookers where they react to certain conditions and generate heat.
Keeping ONE heating element in slot one is a good plan. Additional ones are a bonus and help prevent the primary one from degrading so fast.
Heaters right side panel is the same as the others; circuit board and fuses.
It will function without a circuit board if you got daylight left you should fix the slot if the board is fried. Install another board later. The board slows down degradation of both the fuses and the element cards.
Make sure you got:
Unit ON
3 Working fuses in slots 1, 2, and 3
1 Working Heating Element
Enough solar panels to power unit in daytime
2. WATER
Turn on, Diagnose, and arrange the Carbon filters (like the Oxygen) to have the working one in slot 1. Additional ones help reduce the strain off of #1.
So make sure you have:
Unit ON
3 Working fuses in slots 1,2, and 3
Working Universal Hose
Working Carbon Filter
Working tank. (First one should be a normal tank. the others could be bladder tanks as they are like bags really).
Enough Solar panels providing power to unit.
To make Oxygen, water is required.
So both units are going... there is one more important unit first before Electricity
The mistake is to think you need Electricity unit going... truth is.. that unit ONLY powers the HAB (lights, research, and crafting stations). That power also helps charge any portable batteries you may have. Also, at night, the Hab's power is what keeps the Heater ON.
Let's go in order as if you just discovered them..
1. Oxygen. Turn ON. Diagnose at screen.
If fuses are bad, turn OFF before inserting a new fuse in.
If you do not have a new fuse yet, check the hab.
All of the units require at least 3 Fuses to function.
Oxygen needs at least two storage tanks (possible four) for basic ops.
The manual on the machine says it needs one, but hey, pretend it said two.
You'll thank me later.
Solar panels it really needs one large, and maybe a couple small.. After a while you'll figure out the energy requirements for each unit.
Anyways, make sure one Carbon filter is installed on the left side panel and 3 fuses are in slots 1, 2, and 3 (easier to stay in order).
1 Universal Hose (you really need two.. but just get it working first).
1 tank (2 if you got them -- not including the bladder tank. which I use for water).
Then go back and do diagnostics to see if each unit is working.
If it's not working it will explain why... usually a bad fuse, circuit board, or another specific part.
ALL of the units will function without circuit boards so it's no biggie. But other items like the fuses will degrade if the unit has a broken board or none.
Cleaning the items (aka repair) takes time. If the socket (like a fuse ) is broke this can take 30 minutes of elapsed time - BEWARE of that. Remember, you are trying to get it running so you can go inside and breathe, eat, sleep...etc.
So the best advice is to check each one first... TURN OFF Power to the unit BEFORE you change out a FUSE. Otherwise watch the new fuse explode as you install it. This applies to all powered units. I have gotten away with installing fuses into the Weather stations... without a fail.. but still. Just turn the unit OFF first... (Way stations on/off switches are on the diag screen).
Press Q to bring up the Scanning Hub. This helps a lot. Sometimes I forget to turn it on... later when you get a rover.. (which I think is near the Hab that is in the South East direction of the map--- probably the 3rd one you will find).... you can move faster and drive at night from one Hab area to another.
The four stations (which the video didn't go into detail) are:
1.Oxygen
2.Water
3.Heat
4.Electricity
That's a round about order in which you should check in getting them going. Best thing to do when starting out is to just TURN them all ON (via the switch on a small pole in between the Unit and the five solar panels).
