To get back to your starting position and The Gate, autoplay will show you the way.

Each location type has 6 different instances, for exmaple there are 6 different rock
zones, 6 different galactic zones. Leave a marker behind so you know where you
have been. if you're looking for something in a City zone, it might not exist in your
current city zone, try switching to a different one.

Did you know the Minuscule/Cellular scale both have an underwater version?
Try entering these scales in a river/lake/ocean.

Having trouble finding satellite/space probes? Try using the Restart Area button in
settings to respawn as a random object, go massive, check the area and repeat.

You can transform while inside the gate, but you have to use the things menu.

You can go somewhere random in the universe by entering a Black Hole

If you get frustrated, let go of the controller/keyboard.
