TIPS: a couple of quick tips that can save new players time when learning!
1. RECON. As with most strategy games the need for RECON is obvious, yet still somehow needs to be stated from time to time. Try to maintain solid recon coverage of the areas immediately surrounding your forces. That will help you plan attacks, and offer some warning of enemy attacks and/or ambushes.

....with that one out of the way.

2. LOS TOOL. Whatever you've changed your keybinds to, find the one for the LOS tool (default is the C KEY). Holding that KEY down while moving your mouse around on the screen lets you view the LOS (line of sight) from anywhere on the map. This tool alone is a huge benefit to any armchair commander looking to survive in SD. Use this tool when looking to place your units, as well as when planning where and when to attack/push. It is invaluable when combined with the next tip.

3. UNIT PLACEMENT. When right-clicking to place a unit, keep holding the mouse button down while dragging in the direction you wish the unit to face. In this manner (and with the use of the LOS-tool described above) one can always ensure they are making the best use of the unit and any surrounding terrain.

4. COMMAND UNITS. These units are POWERFUL units for their passive ability to augment (buff) the stats of nearby units. Friendly units perform better when a command unit (no it does not matter if infantry or vehicle etc.) is nearby. Their accuracy, morale, etc. are all buffed so they perform their duties better. One can have a command unit following their units by left-clicking to select the command unit and then right-clicking on the unit to follow. You can also set your command units to follow an ALLY for instance to help out their units in a push/attack.

5. QUEUEING ORDERS. You can queue up movement orders while still in the deployment stage. Take advantage of this as it makes the game-start less frantic. Also on the topic of queueing orders. You can queue the ammo trucks to go to several different units one after the other.

For example. You might left-click select your unit. Holding SHIFT you might then hit F (fast travel), then left-click a destination. Still holding SHIFT you might then hit Y (dismount/unload at X location) and then left-click a location to unload there.

In fact, many (if not most) of the commands that worked in other games with the same engine (wargame series) will/should work here.

Hopefully these few quick tips help saving some time/frustration for new players. Only good things happen when a good game grows its playerbase so here's hoping for a solid launch come May.

CREDIT goes to the player RADIOSHOW for drawing my attention to the fact that so many commands from other games with the same engine (Wargame series) like queueing up the supply/ammo truck for multiple targets etc. also work in this game.

Happy hunting everyone.......and good luck fellow armchair generals! :)

@jellowiggler, it's in the first tutorial, hold shift to queue orders.

Just started playing SD1. I can't believe they didn't outline the command queue ability in the tutorials. The stress and ability to conduct a battle is way less if you don't constantly have to keep checking that you didn't forget to unload units.

Cheers Glitch. There is a lot to learn. I spotted SD2 and thought I would like to try SD 1 first. Loving the game. There is all sorts of hidden tricks though that are not documented anywhere as far as I can tell. Like getting units onto empty transports, which it turns out includes resupply trucks. Firing smoke requires a separate key stroke to activate, way point movement using shift key etc etc etc.

@dan2050 I didn't know people were still playing the first SD. :) Glad to see it. If you are speaking of the Jeep units with the .50 cal, these are best used like mobile MG emplacements at range vs soft targets.

Any tips about some unit types? e.g. What do the jeep pool units do, apart from drive around?

LATE REPLY: just to put this out there: If anyone is having the issue MIKE.SMARTIES stated below please navigate to the following folder on your PC. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteelDivision\_commonRedist\" . From there you can go into either of the two subfolders (DirectX and/or VCredist) and force the install of either DIRECTX and/or Visual C++ runtimes which I suspect may be what is holding those installations up.
