Why I created this Guide...
I've been lurking around the Forums and I've noticed that people are not too fond of Rudy. While most of the complaints are true, the idea of how to play Rudy gets thrown out the window (Mostly during Act 3). People heavily rely on Lariat to pretty much win the game for them. I understand it's his most powerful move, but there's more to him than abusing Lariat.

I'm by no means a pro in this game. I just love playing as Rudy as a main damage dealer and just started to explore what he can do outside of just Lariat spamming. So let's get to it.

Move Breakdown
Striking
Rudy has a very simple 3 hit combo with his Punches, 2 hits with Kicks. His complete ground strike combo is: K > P > P > P OR K. Big Boot is a great move for knocking enemies into each other for crowd control.

Flying Elbow is a great move to use on grounded enemies. If you land the move in the right spot, you are able to chain it into Whiplash. In Act 3 however, Enemies are able to stand up after being hit with Flying Elbow. Try to catch them with a grab quickly after hitting them to lead into other attacks.

His strikes give him forward momentum, so there are times where your strikes will miss. But you can combo into a grab after you hit an enemy. Always try to go for grabs with Rudy. It will help you avoid the problems that he has with striking.

The Problems? Well... his strikes are very slow. There will be times, especially in Act 3, where the enemy will walk away from your attacks even mid combo. This is why Rudy's best striking is in the air. Hitting an enemy with a Jump Punch/Kick puts them into hitstun, allowing you to continue with ground strikes or even go into a Grab.

Grabs
The meat of Rudy's gameplan, and he has a lot so I'm only going to cover the most important ones.

Pavement Breaker
Your combo ender when your enemy is in the air. After the grab, you are able to pick the enemy up and continue the combo or just whack them with Mud Stomp. Can surprisingly combo from Piledriver and is even usable when your opponent is standing. Great tool to use.

Rolling Blunder & Towel Whip
Only usable when the opponent is grabbed from behind, but these 2 grabs can chain into each other infinitely as long as you keep hold of the enemy. Good damage and solid grabs to use within the combo.

Whiplash
Your main damage dealer in endgame along with Spinning Lariat due to being able to repeat the move until your standard mook is dead. After the animation ends you can follow up from it with Strikes, any specials, and even a grab. These options depends on the enemy though. There are times where the enemy will block the hit or just take it. Going for grab is the easier route.

You are able to do Whiplash from the enemy's head if spaced correctly. As long as the end hitbox of the grab range touches the feet of the grounded enemy, you will be able to do whiplash on them from the other side.

Tossup
Want your enemies airborne? This is the move you will use a lot. Puts the enemy in a juggle state for you to combo into jumping strikes or Pavement Breaker. Can be chained from Rolling Blunder & Towel Whip.

Tornado DDT
The dash grab move, and a really good one. Is able to combo into Flying Elbow > Whiplash due to the recovery facing the same way you ran towards. A great combo starter if you want to start with a grounded opponent.

Hair Grab
Unlocked after finding the Hidden Book in the Arcade Bathroom (2nd from left). This move is a godsend to Rudy's grab game as it allows you to pick up enemies from the ground and put them back into the grab position (Always forward position from what I tested). Chain grabs galore, once you get this ability expect yourself to rely on grabs a majority of the time. Will also help with Act 3 enemies.

Same situation as Whiplash, you are able to grab the enemy's head from the legs if you space the grab correctly.

Specials

Rudy Rush
Rudy runs toward the enemies and slams them backwards. Is able to grab airborne enemies for a smooth and easy ground state. If timed correctly, you can combo from a Shining Wizard into Rudy Rush to continue the combo closer to you. Solid move and one you will use a lot.

Sonic Clap
If you need a tool to make enemies stop running away from you, this is it. Sonic Clap is a strong special attack that stuns the enemy for about 5 seconds. You are able to combo into anything after you land this attack. Hitting an airborne enemy will drop them on the floor and put them in the same dizzy state, a good attack to force the enemy back to the ground. However it does have some windup time and the enemy can just simply walk away from it. Use it sparingly.

Scoop Slam
A very situational move. Gives you invincilbility when performing the move however it is extremely slow and unfortunately does very little damage for the windup it has. Will have to experiment with this move a little more. But outside of using it after Sonic Clap, I've found no uses in other moves.
Closing/Showcase
Will continue to update the Guide as I experiment with Rudy. Try playing around with his grabs and discover new things with this character. Until next time.

i just got to rudy's max potential and i must say he is deff my favorite character in the game although i still agree with the fact that he is the worst character in the game he is in fact very fun. i made a combo video for him on my YT. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb7gofT7XH8&ab_channel=YoMama

Military guys and agents are the challenging enemies because they actively try to surround you, whereas lesser enemies will let you keep your back safe. Jump kick into Rush is handy here, Rudy Salad also useful to avoid ground attack from behind you during grab and move yourself away a little. Spinning Lariat can catch the one trying to jump behind you for a quick kill if you have the window.

Spinning Lariat can clear those pesky agents on elevator of final level fast. Wait for the floor to stop and spin on the door.

After painfully finish the game with Rudy + some newgame+, here is what i can add:

Against lategame enemies (which are very good at avoiding grab/specials), here is what i find to be effective to catch them: (1) block enemy attack then follow up with Spinning Lariat asap, best for slow attack with longer recovery time, quick kill; (2) block enemy attack then follow up with Rudy Rush asap, good if enemy attack is fast with short recovery time, (3) jump + kick followed by Rudy Rush (Spinning Lariat also possible but more risky). (4) enemies landing from a jump is ez target for Rush/Spin. This will catch the target most of the time if your timing is good. If they escape with a jump, usually it is safe because they dont normally attack you before your attack is finished.

Once you catch them you can continue with all sort of grab attacks. If one is about to get up you can Rudy Rush him to grab endlessly, they usually cant avoid this.

Thx a lot for making this guide. I want to help add:
-rudy rush crying animation is invincible (forward+S) i usually use it to replace blocking
-one big mistake i did when looking for rudy's book: it's actually in the arcade's toilet, not in the school's

Nice early game tactic I've found with Rudy is get Irish Whip throw. Grab someone, headbutt them a few times. Irish Whip them then chase them with a big boot.

Tried Rudy after the patch, that added extra starting moves. Fail to see, how Rudy is hard at the start. Went with K P P G headbutt (2-3 times) and Powerbomb. Preferably engage in a fight, when all the enemies are on one side of you. But even if you start with them on both sides, Powebomb knocks down everyone in front and behind you (assuming they are close enough). Hence, if i see someone approaching me from behind, during a grab, i use Powerbomb and proceed with picking them off. And i leveled to lvl 10 with the basic moves at the Sauna zone and Taco zone for stats, before i proceeded to buy new skills. Mid-late game, thats where it starts to get challenging, but still fun.

Guide updated. Includes the location of the Hidden Book. Would like to give thanks to Bad Mind for the find earlier today. Also did a breakdown of it.

I'm finally making some headway. The early game was a struggle but it's getting better. I think it's best to not engage too many enemies early on. Get some $$. Get to the burger joint. Max some stamina, Get that drop kick combo along with Mud stomp ASAP and you finally have a somewhat decent attacking base while you save up for his more advanced grabs... man those things are expensive.

Crap, sorry, I think Spinning Lariat is actually at the second dojo, my bad. From the first dojo Rudy Rush is the move to get first.

@Suds: Yeah, it's a slog in the early going. But eventually becomes a crazy beast (if you know how to play him). Best thing is probably to just keep going in the arcade, robbing the token machine, then running out. Rinse & repeat for easy money. And for leveling hang out by the sauna and keep your stamina maxed.

SgtSlig, That's good to know but that's what kills me about this character. The early grind sucks. I spent extra time in river city HS to level up to about level 6 or so. I have to largely use the barbell (which is great) to defeat enemies with it's power & range. But the early game for him is awful. You don't have access to any specials. No real combos. And the only real special grab move is the powerbomb. All in all i find this character frustrating... But i keep at it with him. IDK why. ;) SMH
