Introduction
Hello everyone!

My name is Niko, im a enthusiastic player in The Elder Scrolls Online who has seen people struggle to understand how to beat Molag Bal - and the whole stuff that surrounds him.

Some more info about me:
  • Helena the Virtuous
  • Lvl 50 Templar
  • Role: Tank
  • Champion level: 275 and rising
  • Server: Europe
  • Faction: Aldmeri-Dominion
  • Guilds: Adepta Sororitas | Arenthian Trade Guild | The Daggerfall Sentinels

The Daggerfall Sentinels

This is my main guild. The people here are friendly, funny, fun to play with and really helpful towards anyone who needs it. Crafting, explaining, doing dungeons - whatever you need, they can help you out.
"But silly you, isn't that guild called 'Daggerfall Sentinels'? Aren't you in the Dominion?"
Correct! Nontheless i got my first Molag Bal kill with this character. (i did get bashed afterwards though, haha)
For a more convinient gaming i made myself an alternate character.
  • Not A Dominion Spy
  • Lvl 20 Templar
  • Role: Heal / Dps
  • Champion level: 275 and rising
  • Faction: Daggerfall Covenant

I've been healing Molag Bal with this character and mostly lvl 14 crafted gear together with another good healer. It's completely possible to do so.
Basic Info
We are now going to go through the very basics of what we need to know before attempting Molag Bal.

Question
Awnser
What is Molag Bal?
Molag Bal is a PvE Boss in a PvP Area.
Do i need any DLC for this?
Yes! You need the Imperial City DLC to be able to enter the Sewers!
Why should i want to kill him?
Because you get an amazing Dye, lots of gold and a chance on dropping ultra rare pets / skins!
Where do i fight him?
You will fight him in the Imperial Sewers, located inside the Imperial City in Cyrodil.
How many people do i need?
Around 8 people are needed for beating him, but its recommended to have 12 players as you want to have maximum safety in the PvP Zone!
Why are 12 players optimal?
When it comes down to looting Molag Bal, not everyone gets it all the time. Only the Top 10 Dps and Top 2 Healers will receive Loot. With 12 players, you ensure everyone can have a chance on the rare items. If you take more people than that, someone will miss out.
What level requirements are there?
You will have to be lvl 10 to be able to enter the PvP Zone. Besides that there is no lvl requirement.
Which factions can do this?
All factions are able to do this, but you can only group up with the same faction inside Cyrodil! Make sure to not "mix" people!
What are Tel Var Stones?
Tel Var Stones are a Currency inside the Imperial City/Sewers that you can use to buy either special PVP sets, glyphs that are used to make the tri-stat glyphs, or satchels with random alchemy components.
What are Key Fragments?
Key fragments can be used to open special chests. A stack of 60 fragments sells for 5-6k gold. Usually you get 1-3 stacks, depending on how much time you spend killing mobs going up to Molag Bal.
60 key fragments will let you open one of several trophy vaults in the Imperial City. These drop rare motifs and endurance/agility/willpower gear. 150 fragments will allow you to enter Trophy Vaults in Imperial City Prison or White-Gold Tower. These vaults drop loot from the respective dungeon.
Click here for more info about the Vaults[thereapersesoguild.guildlaunch.com]
Whare are Alliance Points?
Alliance Points are quite similar to Tel Var Stones, but they can be traded and gained outside of the Imperial City / Sewers.
How will I enter Cyrodil?
To be able to enter Cyrodil you need to be lvl 10. Open up the Alliance window ('L') and right click on the 7 day campaign 'Haderus'. Choose it as your guest campaign to be able to que up for it and not loosing your home campaign (Which you might not have yet, but still).
Getting started
What should you worry about when attempting a Molag Bal run?

First, gather people. 8 players are plenty enough to be killing him, but you might want to make sure to have 12 people to ensure maximum safety and easy farming.

You will not need more than 1 tank, but 2 healers are definitely recommended, especially if one of them is not lvl 50.

So, it should look like this: 1 Tank, 9 Dps, 2 Healer.

Do not group up yet - Cyrodil does not like groups entering the area. I'm not even joking...
Before you enter the queue for Cyrodil you will want to empty your bags as much as possible. Take some buff-food, potions and picklocks with you, the rest is not needed.
Cryodil - Reaching the Sewers
Once you entered Cyrodil you can start inviting the other players and form a group. Check out the map and make plans how to reach the Sewer Entrance.

Depending on how PvP is going this might involve some footwork... You can only teleport to a location within your influence and that has not been cut off by some other faction. Hopefully that is one of the Forts close to the middle - if not, you will have to take the next best location and mount up.

To be able to teleport, you have to use the teleporting area in your first fortress, which can easily be overlooked. Make sure not to miss it.
Sewers - Reaching the Center
Reaching the Center can be quite a challenge on its own.
The Idea is relatively simple - fight your way through NPC's, Players and Bosses to the center, and do not die too often ;-)

However, that's easier said than done.

On your way you will encounter various types of enemies, most of them easy to beat. (Remember to loot them all!)
The problematic factor is
a) The Bosses
b) Enemy Players

Bosses are a "must kill" so to say, as you will have to face 3 of them later on, so you should be testing your combat skills on the ones you encounter. They are not too hard, but still a challenge for unexperienced players. Beware of their hard hitting AOE abilities!

You can identify the bosses by their "aura" which is visible when you are sneaking. That aura marks their detection area and should be avoided if you are not looking for a fight.

Enemy players might try to ambush people here and there, so always stick to the group. Make sure to not let anyone escape, as they might be coming back at you at a later point, which is not what you want. Kill them, get their Tel Var Stones, carry on.

Important Note here: Sneaking in a PvP Area works as with normal Mobs. You will not be visible to the enemy, but they will be invisible to you as well. Prepare some skills beforehand to be able to de-stealth enemy players.

The Sewers are divided into 4 Sections for all factions.
Starting Area
2 Areas on your way to the center
Center
Once you reaach the Center, you will have to be way more careful not to fall into an ambush. Make sure to scout the area while sneaking and always check corners for enemies. You will not want to die here!
'Summoning' Molag Bal
To summon Molag Bal you need to clear the 3 Portals in the middle of the room.
Each Portal consists of 3 waves. The inital Mobs standing in front of it, another batch spawning once you defeated them, and a Random Champion at the end.

The Champion Type is random. e.g. Warrior or Mage.
Depending on the type he also has different skills. Beware, the Mage AOE's are hitting quite hard!

Once you closed all 3 Portals Molag Bal will spawn next to the one facing north. (towards Ebonheart Pact's Area)
The Fight
The fight itself is very basic - thus quite easy.

He spawn at the gate facing north (towards the Ebonheart Pact Disctrict), but does not attack right away. Only when you engage him yourself.
The fight mostly goes down the 'Tank & Spank' route. Evade his occasional AOE's, go max Dps and keep the group alive. The only notable things are:

  • He jumps up from time to time. Go immediately into blocking mode unless you want to sacrifice a lot of health / your life
  • When Molag Bal dies, everyone (including the tank) has to block right away. He does an incredibly strong AOE which will kill you
Molag Bal is dead - what now?
Now that Molag Bal is dead you should get your loot ASAP - you don't know wether you might die or not. Secure your loot, and then secure your surroundings. Make sure everyone stealths up and check whether some enemy players are around.

Once you are safe, you have multiple options to choose from.

  • 1. Stay around and wait for the respawn. (20 minutes)
  • 2. Go up into the imperial City and do some PvP
  • 3. Clean the middle area of the sewers from NPC mobs and farm some more Tel Var Stones
  • 4. Push into enemy Areas and try some PvP
  • 5. A mix out of the above mentioned options

Decide with your group what to do and when to quit. Farming Molag Bal is quite a fun thing to do, but not very rewarding if you do not get the wanted loot. It's all about RNG.

If you want to leave Cyrodil, you just have to leave the sewers by the cyrodil door, you will be transported to the starting area. There you will be able to use one of the usual teleporting areas to teleport out of Cyrodil and back into normal areas.

This pictures shows the skin that Molag Bal might drop for you.
Outro
First of all, i want to thank someone.

Veizyr, the one and only. He has to explain all the stuff above to new people each time we go to farm Molag Bal. All the information i gathered is from him. Kudos!

He is the reason i made this guide, so all the information can be looked up.

Thank you adam1224 for proofreading the guide. :)

Now that you've successfully killed (or farmed) Molag Bal, you can come back any time. Make plans with your friends and go hunt down that Daedric Suc*er! :)

Don't forget to check out your new Dye, save your Tel Var Stones (or spend them) and enjoy your loot!

@Maverick you are completely correct! Checked again and looks like my google skills have failed me. Switching out the Pcitures now as we speak. Thanks for pointing it out :)

Congratulations for creating such a nice guide, but I believe you displayed the wrong image for the skin that you get as a drop from Molag Bal. The picture that you've posted shows the Mind-Shriven skin, NOT the Soul-Shriven skin, which is completely different. The Soul-Shriven skin is the one which drops from Molag-Bal. If needed, I can also provide a link with the correct picture, in order for you to replace the one found in the guide.

@Unknown thats totally normal though. They are playing for months, if not years. Wait until you reach the higher cp levels and start doing vet dungeons. Lvl is not everything, a lot of high cp players are actually shit :)

@Nikolaj Degtjarjow I only have 1 character atm, hes lvl 49 but is almost 50. Yet I see all these 100-600 champion point level people running around or pretty much everywhere :S. It feels pretty discouraging at times since I feel useless in dungeons in comparison ;-;.

Damn, solid guide. I played the game in the BETA and for a month afterwards. Just got back into it 2 weeks ago on a new character, got all DLC, loving it. I Am CP38 right now, will be sure to do this after getting better gear/higher stats. Finding a party might be quite hard for a newbie like me tho. Still got a lot to learn.
