Just tested it, worked like a charm.
Something is wrong with your game, in one way or another.

Now it's technically possible that the save from such a new game could have been corrupted, but I doubt it. Disabling the mod resolved the problem. Re-enabling it after the fact reproduced it.

Brand new game. Turned it on after that point and it still froze the game once I killed an enemy ship.

I doubt that claim, the mod does not affect campaign missions in any way.
A corrupted save sounds more likely.

I've recently fired up the game again and it seems that there's a bug in the campaign causing the game to crash. At the first mission after the prologue/tutorial, the one where you need to destroy some defense platform, this mod causes the game to lock up and crash once the two support ships are destroyed. I have no idea why this is, but I determined it to be this mod through an arduous process of elimination. No, the log files aren't terribly helpful.
