Section 1: Modifying your DefaultGameUserSettings.ini
THIS GUIDE IS 100% SAFE AND LEGAL. YOU WILL NOT GET BANNED, CORRUPT YOUR GAME, ETC. IF YOU WANT TO REVERT TO DEFAULT SETTINGS AT ANY TIME: DELETE THE FILES YOU MODIFIED AND VALIDATE YOUR GAME FILES VIA STEAM LIBRARY.

Simply modify the DefaultGameUserSettings.ini located in your Config folder
C:\Users\YourUserName\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Days of War\DaysOfWar\Config
as follows:

The values are 0 to 3, with 3 being the most taxing and 0 being the least taxing.

Good starting point to see immediate improvements in FPS:
[ScalabilityGroups] sg.ResolutionQuality=100 sg.ViewDistanceQuality=1 sg.AntiAliasingQuality=0 sg.ShadowQuality=1 sg.PostProcessQuality=1 sg.TextureQuality=1 sg.EffectsQuality=1 sg.FoliageQuality=1

If you are still looking for more frames and don't mind the reduced quality:
[ScalabilityGroups] sg.ResolutionQuality=100 sg.ViewDistanceQuality=0 sg.AntiAliasingQuality=0 sg.ShadowQuality=0 sg.PostProcessQuality=0 sg.TextureQuality=0 sg.EffectsQuality=0 sg.FoliageQuality=0

Play around with the values, especially ViewDistanceQuality and TextureQuality to see what works best for you.

Personally I am using the following settings with the latest patch (1/27/2017) and it is crystal clear for long distances:
[ScalabilityGroups] sg.ResolutionQuality=100 sg.ViewDistanceQuality=3 sg.AntiAliasingQuality=0 sg.ShadowQuality=0 sg.PostProcessQuality=0 sg.TextureQuality=1 sg.EffectsQuality=0 sg.FoliageQuality=0

You don't have to do anything but modify the values manually or copy and paste over the original lines of code in this file.
Reasoning: Reduces graphical demands lower than available through the in-game options and increases performance, as well as making visibility clearer.

Attention: Your DefaultGameUserSettings.ini may reset the custom values after certain game updates or after manually changing the graphical settings in-game.
Section 2: Modifying your DefaultScalability.ini
Adding in settings for sg.FoliageQuality:

Open DefaultScalability.ini located in your Config folder (Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Days of War\DaysOfWar\Config)

Add the following code to the bottom of the file to be able to select levels of detail between 0 and 3 in your DefaultGameUserSettings.ini config file

;---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [FoliageQuality@0] foliage.DensityScale=0 grass.DensityScale=0 [FoliageQuality@1] foliage.DensityScale=0.4 grass.DensityScale=0.4 [FoliageQuality@2] foliage.DensityScale=0.8 grass.DensityScale=0.8 [FoliageQuality@3] foliage.DensityScale=1.0 grass.DensityScale=1.0

Save the file after making any changes.
Section 3: Misc. Information
Video settings check:
To avoid 'blurryness' in-game, make sure your "Screen Percentage" in the "Video" settings is all the way to the right (100%).

Remember to disable all of the 'fluff' features such as Dust, Lights, and Weather as well as VSync.

Gameplay settings check:
In the "Gameplay" settings, you will want to disable the "Camera Bob Enabled" option, and look into using their "Debug" options which can help performance as well.

They warn that the animation visibility optimization is experimental, but can help those on low-end hardware or who want to try and improve performance.

---

In-Game Usernames:
To change your in-game name, it should be based off of your Steam name but if that does not work: edit the "PlayerNickname=" line in your "AppData\Local\DaysOfWar\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor\Engine.ini" file.
Section 4: Utilizing Console Commands
There aren't many console commands compared to most games, but here are the few that we have found to be useful:

  • gamma 3 | Changes your in-game gamma. Range: 1 to 5.
  • stat fps | Shows your FPS and ms.
  • stat unit | Shows overall frame time, game thread, rendering thread, and GPU times.
Section 5: Before & After Screenshots (No Gamma Changes)

After:

Thanks to Turner for the screenshots.

So a mapper adds fog to limit visibility and these commands removes it wonderful

It doesn't give you as big as an advantage as you think (just tested the best settings vs this) but if you adjust it more it does. In the future this needs to be limited but able to be used on servers that want it.

These are settings built in by the developer |$m0k!n|-4HUD- & Hell-Spawn. Nothing unfair is happening. In fact by making this more transparent all players know and can adjust to their liking. There is nothing usual about reducing effects and texture quality. Seriously standard stuff going on here. Same thing Jackfrags does for his comp settings in BF1.

All players try and optimize the game when playing competitively. Many CS:GO players play in 4:3 for just this reason. So no worries.

Manipulating the way the computer processes atmospheric conditions is one thing. Adding cores, priority, post-processing, etc. But removing fog and smoke or lessening its harshness on-screen is stepping into the gray area. Similar to how DX8 console commands were used by people with "low end" systems in DODS to get past smoke, and abused by people who didn't actually have low end systems but wanted to game the other players. I'm not saying I do not appreciate this write up, this set of tweaks, but rather that his criticisms were wholly warranted.

Bradley, are you not understanding what smokin is saying??? Some of these elements being taken out specifically make the game easier to play at the cost of fairness. It's a game based on competition. If one person sees something another doesn't, well, that fucks up the fairness. It's not rocket science. I want to buy a ferrari but I can't complain to the guy that I have low-end paychecks and expect to get into that ferrari today. I need to work towards it. Otherwise that cheapens all the other ferraris on the road. Ferraris no longer become fun. Just like this game.

4HUD, some of these changes are needed for players on low-end hardware to run the game in a playable state, as well as players who find simplicity the most enjoying in 'competitive' games. :ss13ok:

If your suggestions was all about what hardware to buy or how to overclock your old system to run the game as it was meant to be played, that would be nice, especially the last part. But a guide on how to imbalance the game for a few extra fps, that's really bad.

You write "Personally I am using the following settings with the latest patch (1/27/2017) and it is crystal clear for long distances". That's a problem, because the game is not supposed to be crystal clear, but foggy and blurry to provide cover and make it more even. I really hope the DOW team get a grip and learn how to optimize to eliminate the need to cheat.
