The Basics: Setting Up a Server
First things first, we gotta set up a server! I'll be showing you how set up your server (minus port-forwarding, sorry) from in game and getting it started so your friends or randoms can race with you!

Step 1: Click the 'Arcade' button.

Step 2: Click the 'Online' button.

Now here we'll find the server browser, but we don't want to join someone else's server, we wanna host our own!

Step 3: Click the 'Start a New Server' button.

Now, if you haven't port-forwarded already, this is when you must do so. Here[portforward.com] and here[www.wikihow.com] are the two guides the developers have been kind enough to include down at the bottom of the screen when starting a server.

Here you can change your server's name (how it appears in the server browser), you can increase or decrease the maximum amount of players (as of Jan. 2, 2017 the current maximum is 12), and you can put a password on your server in order to make your server private to play with friends (but they need to have the password as well, just a heads up)!

Step 4: Once you're finished making all the changes you desire to your server and have port-forwarded, you may now click the 'START SERVER' button.

Once you've done that, you should now be at this screen:

This is where the action happens, here you can choose which gamemodes you want (depending on which gamemode you select, certain maps will be available while others will not), chat with those you're playing with, and even customize your car while you wait for everyone to ready up (all players must select the 'Ready?' button before you can begin to race).
Hosting 101: How to be a Good Host
As with any game, there's etiquette that comes with playing a game with others. In case you lack basic social skills, or you want to find out what the community likes and doesn't like, here's a little list that can help you be a good host and better player overall:

  • When hosting maps that are of 'Nightmare' difficulty, and new players start joining in, either warn them of the difficulty, or play some easier maps. Don't just randomly kick a new player, at least let them know of the challenge so that they may leave themselves.
  • Be ready to show newer players skips. For those of you out of the Distance loop, skips are used to get to the end of a map quicker. These are usually known as shortcuts, but they're anything but short. Sometimes these skips cut through the entire map. They're complicated, but well worth learning.
  • Be willing to communicate to those who you're hosting for. As said earlier, remind newer players of a possibly overly-difficult map that they might be playing on.
  • When failing a map repeatedly, don't restart the entire map, simply press the explode button (which is, by default, bound to 'T') so you can respawn quicker. It'll annoy those you're playing with if you constantly keep resetting the map, that said, restarting the map once everyone has finished is perfectly acceptable, just be willing to communicate to other players.

TL;DR
  • Don't be an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
  • Be willing to talk to others
Pro-Hosting-Tip: Play Good Maps
Here's the fun part of the guide (like this guide wasn't already fun, right?)! So, as is any gaming community, there's a majority opinion towards certain maps, whether that be good or bad. If you need help finding some good maps, here is a list of links to great workshop collections:

(I got the list from here.)

This list will be updated as time goes on, if you have any suggestions for maps or collections, please leave a comment down below. Also, in case you want ALL of the workshop content available, you can use this link to go to a collection that contains all workshop content and just click the 'Subscribe to All' button.

On the Subject of Acceleracers or Realms Maps:
A lot of people are on the fence about these maps. I, for one, like the maps to an extent, but at the end of the day I would rather play a different kind of map. If none of you reading this know what I'm talking about, here is a collection from the workshop with most of the maps. These maps restrict players from jumping, and for the most part, don't allow skipping. This is what turns away a lot of people. Just as a friendly word of advice: DO NOT PLAY THESE MAPS UNLESS YOU HAVE FULL CONSENT FROM YOUR LOBBY IF YOU WANT TO BE A GOOD HOST.
