Getting Started
By DrifterAlgier
Here you will find some simple tips/tricks to help you get started in Versus: Battle of the Gladiator.

I've noticed many new players struggling with the skill gap between noobs and returning players. Since there are not many guides in the community, as of yet, I decided to put this out there in an effort to help new players to enjoy this game as I have.

Combat Basics & Controls
These are the default combat controls, which are covered in tutorials in-game, accessable by clicking "Play" then "Tutorials" on the top bar.

Below are the controls, and a little about each.

Important:
Currently, the tutorial is missing a key component: Dodging

Dodging is simple: double tap the direction you wish to move. Keep in mind that all actions aside from walking require stamina. Also, not all weapons may dash forward. (Greatsword, Hammer)

Dodging is best used to move out of the way of a charge attack, or away from the corner you're being pinned in. You can also use it to rush your enemy, catching them by surprise.

LMB = Basic Attack
RMB = Block
Q = Charge Attack
E = Power Attack
F = Guardbreaker **
S + LMB = Evasive Attack
Shift + LMB = Grapple
Shift + RMB = Counter
Shift + R = Execution
T = Taunt
Enter = Open Chat

Basic Attack: Fast, relatively weak attacks. Use 3 times to perform a rapid combo

Blocking: Used to stop all attacks other than Guardbreakers (Hammer Power Attacks will not be blocked. Flanks will still be vulnerable)

Charge Attack: Used to close the gap or surprise your enemy. Strong damage

Power Attack: Your most powerful move. Deals a large amount of damage, stunning or toppling your enemy

Guardbreaker: Used to injure an opponent and break their blocking. Relatively strong damage. Usually stuns or topples an enemy.

Evasive Attack: Used to quickly dodge an attack and strike with great force quickly following. Strong attack

Grapple: Used in close quarters to topple an enemy and or clear room between you. Close, weak attack

Counter: Used to "parry" an attack and strike your enemy. Very Strong attack

Execution: Used when your enemy is low on HP, somewhere within the last bar. Enemy should appear stunned, swaying back and forth in place. This state is called "groggy". Only when an enemy is groggy may an execution be done.

Taunt: Used to bait or enrage an enemy, or simply to gloat. Taunt animation is not unbreakable. You can snap out of it at any moment by pressing any other control, which will immediately perfom that action.
Weapons
Every weapon in Versus: Battle of the Gladiator has a different play style, as well as their own unique abilities/skills. This being said, it is my belief that it is best to use one type of weapon often to master its potential. Please note, all players may use any type of weapon and are not restricted to a certain weapon type. Below is a list of all current weapon types and a bit about how they are used.

Fists: Fast, very close-ranged attacks. Relatively weak. Used by unequipping any other weapons. No grapple, counter move, or executions.

One-Handed: Fast, light attacks.

Dual-Wield: Very fast, easily combo moves. Cannot block. All dodges available. Best in open areas.

Shield & Sword: Moderate speed and damage. Mobile blocking. Cannot dodge left

Hwando: Fast, light attacks. Hit & Run tactics. Very similar to One-Handed.

Axe: Heavier, somewhat slow attacks. Great in tight spaces.

Greatsword: Heavy attacks, slower than most other weapons. Longest average reach per attack. No forward dash.

Hammer: Slow, devastating attacks. Mistakes are unforgiving. Difficult to combo. No forward dash. No Counter move.

A good thing to keep in mind is your weapon's speed and range. Learning these will help considerably. Learning your weapon's strengths and weaknesses, and those of your enemies', will improve your chance for victory.

If you have any questions about the weapons, feel free to message me. If I do not know the weapon well, I will find someone who can give you the information you seek, and relay this to you if need be.

(Greatsword is my favorite)

Armors
Within Versus, there are 2 different types of armor: light and heavy. Light armors weigh less, and therefore use less stamina, and improve movement speed. Heavy armors slow you down and decrease your stamina. Some players forsake armor entirely in favor or speed and more stamina (stamina being referred to as "ST" in-game at times).

Something worth mentioning: Armors are not transferable between genders. Female characters cannot wear male armor and vice versa. Armors are gender-locked. Male armor sets and female armor sets also have different names, and appear different in-game, though they will have very similar counterparts.

Weapon/Armor Stats & Meaning
Before this section, I feel it neccessary to state that I do not fully understand the damage types. The information contained here is as I've experienced it during gameplay.

Damage Types:
There are 3 types of damage in Versus: Battle of the Gladiator. Each is best at a specific circumstance.

Cut: Damage to Health (hp)
Impact: Damage to Armor
Pierce: Damage through Armor

Every weapon and piece of armor has their own values for each. Some weapons will have high cut damage. Others will have high impact. Some will have high piercing damage. Every weapon will have a combination of all 3 types.

Armors will also use varying combinations of defense against each type of damage, meaning they will be more effective against certain types of damage, and vulnerable to others.

Every weapon will also have a random stat. These can increase certain attack types by small amounts, or raise the weapon's balance.

Balance is the stat that effects the speed of your weapon (Possibly reduces stamina use? minor)

Through the use of mods, different stats or benefits may be added to your weapon or armor.

Note:Crude have 0, Normal weapons/armor have 1 mod slot, Fines have 2, Uniques have 3, Legendaries have 4(?)

Item Quality & Crafting
The varying qualities (Increasing) are as follows:

Crude (Grey, most common)
Normal (Green, uncommon)
Fine (Blue, rare)
Unique (Purple, 30% crafting chance from recipe)
Legendary (15% crafting chance from extremely rare recipe)

Crafting:
All complete items (Weapons, armor, accessories) can be scrapped to gain crafting materials.
These materials may be refined to form less common materials, such as tickets for weapons or armor and weapon or armor shards of different types. Refining costs gold.

Skills
Every weapon type has their own skills, unique to their class, which can be changed and upgraded using gold and SP (Special Points; Gained by leveling or as a drop after level 30). Not all skills have a variant that it can be swapped with. Exceptions to upgrades are taunts and executions.

(This section may be expanded at a later date)

Tips/Tricks
1. Often times, I will be in a match with a new player, and they spam their basic attack against a block. This is not only ineffective, it will momentarily stun you, giving the enemy a chance to attack. Use a guardbreaker to break the block, or attempt to flank them.

2. As mentioned before, blocking an attack stuns an opponent. This creates a perfect opportunity to perform a combo. As soon as you've blocked an attack, hit your enemy before they recover.

3. Watch for patterns in your enemy's movements and attacks.

4. Learn to counter. Counters deal massive damage if you can time it right and are facing them.

5. Learn combos for your weapon(s). These are sequences of attacks that your enemy cannot escape from, devasting their health and armor. (For the sake of gameplay, I will not list combos for weapons in this guide)

6. Be friendly/honorable. Since the community is currently small, word travels fast. Let's keep the chat free of flame (I have my outbursts too) and enjoy the game.

Feel free to ignore this last part if you'd like, it is after all, a suggestion. We're all free to do as we like.
Conclusion
To sum it up, Versus: Battle of the Gladiator is a very competetive game. Perseverence and Valor are rewarded in-game through your drops at the end of a match and by leveling up. (Current max level is 30) Even though I only started this game a little over 2 weeks ago, the community is friendly for the most part, and helpful to each other. Everyone wants to emerge victorious, no matter the cost. I hope this guide will help you get started, and to stick with our little community.

Thank you for your time
