雷峰塔 Leifeng Pagoda

西湖十景之一(「雷峰夕照」)。建於975年，傳說是吳越王錢弘俶為慶祝寵妃黃氏得子而建，昔日亦稱黃妃塔，因為塔建於西湖南岸夕照山的雷峰之上，民間稱之為雷峰塔。明嘉靖年間，倭寇放火燒掉了雷峰塔木質結構，只留下了磚體塔身，後來，由於傳說雷峰塔的塔磚可以用來驅病強身或安胎，許多人就從塔磚上磨取粉末、挖取磚塊。1924年9月25日下午，幾乎挖空的塔基再也不堪重負，突然全部崩塌。2002年新雷峰塔重建於舊雷峰塔的原址之上，塔座部分成為遺址的展示廳。(摘自: 維基百科 [zh.wikipedia.org])

one of the Ten Scenes of West Lake ("Leifeng Pagoda in the Sunset"). The original was built in 975 AD, during Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, at the order of King Qian Chu (born Qian Hongchu) of Wuyue, to celebrate the birth of Qian Chu's son, born to Huang Fei. During the Ming dynasty, Japanese pirates attacked Hangzhou and burned its wooden elements, leaving only the brick skeleton. Later, due to a superstition that the bricks from the tower could repel illness or prevent miscarriage, many people stole bricks from the tower to grind into powder. The pagoda finally collapsed in 1924 and the new pagoda we see today was rebuilt in 2002 on top of the ruins of the old one. The base of the pagoda become an exhibition room of the old pagoda's ruin.
