Killing Large Zeds [OUTDATED]
By Brownstone
The guide is outdated because there are lots of new weapons in the game now and I haven't been playing for a very long time. Almost every combo here should be still working and some are still the best but there should be some more efficient methods now.

INTRODUCTION
Everything is based on 6 players Hell on Earth difficulty, so they can be applied on lower difficulties too, just easier. Level 25 is required, but you can still perform some of these methods to a degree even if your level is lower, especially on lower difficulties.

I listed the loadout and skills needed to perform each kill. Mandatory skills and weapons are outlined with yellow color.

Primary Large Zed killers are Demolitionist and Sharpshooter, while the secondaries are Gunslinger, Support and Berserker. They all have their advantages & disadvantages. Swat, Commando, Medic and Firebug are not supposed to kill them but I still listed them in case you need to do something in an emergency.

Remember, these videos were recorded on a test map, where I'm not under any pressure from the horde surrounding and teammates randomly shooting. It'll be much harder to kill Large Zeds in an actual game. If you want to practice solo kills, you can download the map HERE
(Don't forget to read the description on how to use the map)

The key is teamwork. If you're not playing a Large Zed killer, it's not your job to kill them. In fact, you shouldn't even shoot them because Large Zeds rage after taking a small amount of damage, and enraging multiple of them at the same time may cause a team wipe. If you want XP to level up, you can just shoot with your 9mm Pistol once and you'll get the full XP once it's killed.

This is a co-op game. When Large Zeds are approaching, everyone should do their job. Even if you're a Support, it's not your job to take them out when there is a Sharpshooter in your team. Your job is to give the Sharpshooter enough breathing room by killing the horde so he can perform the kill. If everyone focuses on the incoming Large Zed, the horde will overwhelm you and it will end up with a team wipe. Always prioritize your job, this is the key to victory.

Don't fire your RPG for a bunch of Clots or don't dump your Scar magazine to a Fleshpound.

Thanks for reading my guide, I hope it helps.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Some information about Large Zed mechanics:

  • Raged Large Zeds gain speed and damage boost, that's why it's important to kill them quickly. Enraging multiple Large Zeds without a good plan will result in a team wipe.

  • Scrakes rage when their health drops to 75% on Suicidal, and 90% on Hell on Earth.

  • Once a Scrake is raged, it's the most dangerous Zed ever. It won't stop until it's killed.

  • Fleshpounds rage when they take 276 damage, or 10-14 seconds after having line of sight with a player. Getting out of it's sight won't reset this timer. Once it sees you, the timer starts.

  • Fleshpounds calm down after hitting a player once, so they're not as dangerous as Scrakes when raged. But still, they're a priority when there are multiple Large Zeds.
The amount of danger is: Raged Scrake > Raged Fleshpound > Calm Fleshpound > Calm Scrake

  • When getting hit by a Large Zed is unavoidable, pull out your knife, jump and parry it. The parry will mitigate some of the damage and also you get knocked away by jumping, putting distance between you and the Large Zed. This is really useful for survival, especially against Fleshpounds because once you tank a hit, they calm down, giving you more control.

If you want deeper knowledge, here is the most detailed guide available for this game:

DEMOLITIONIST
ADVANTAGES
  • Horde surrounding gets blown up in the process
  • Can handle multiple or raged Large Zeds

DISADVANTAGES
  • Explosions may enrage other Large Zeds
  • Reloads often, no room for mistake

NOTE: The best Large Zed killers are Sharpshooter and Demolitionist, so they have the most combos.
But the latest update (FPs have a high chance of spawning raged) made Sharpshooter less and Demolitionist more effective, also Demolitionist is my main so this guide is a bit more focused on it compared to the others, because it's the best Large Zed killer now in my opinion.

KILLING SCRAKES
Scrakes are highly resistant to explosions but they're weak against the RPG headshot impact, which will let us deal huge headshot damage to them. With all the skills on the left, RPG headshots deal almost 8x damage to Scrakes.

Your Dynamite can stun any Zed, very useful for emergency situations.

NOTE: Explosive projectiles don't blow up if fired at a distance shorter than 3 meters (to prevent killing yourself) but doesn't matter if the missile explodes or just hits blunt, it will deal impact damage anyway. While killing Scrakes, sometimes it's better if it explodes so the horde around the Scrake takes damage too, but sometimes it's safer to fire at close range if there are multiple Large Zeds together so the explosion doesn't enrage them.

BUILD 1
My main build. RPG + Magnum is just so amazing against Scrakes that I can't use anything else.
  • The most efficient method. 1 Magnum bullet then 1 RPG headshot will do.

BUILD 2
This build is for people who don't like C4 and prefer to stick with the M79 or M203. Taking Concussive Rounds instead of Armor Piercing Rounds will require 2 missiles per Scrake, which is a waste of ammo. I don't recommend it.
  • Fairly efficent method. It will leave you with 2 empty weapons but otherwise useful. 1 RPG + 1 M79/M203 headshot will do.

KILLING FLESHPOUNDS
Demolitionist is the main Fleshpound killer, since they're weak against explosions. There is no better option, especially when there are multiple of them.

BUILD
You need Bombardier for the extra damage, and that's it (And Siren Resistance of course because the other option reduces explosion damage). You can use anything you like, but I recommend RPG + C4 because C4 is crucial when there are multiple Fleshpounds. RPG alone is just not enough. Of course you can rely on your Berserker teammate who has a Pulverizer to assist you but I'm here to show you how to take care of Fleshpounds on your own.
  • Option 1: My favorite method. Aim for the leg for knockdown.

  • Option 2: For non-C4 users. It takes 3 missiles to kill.

  • Option 3: For non-RPG users. M79 + C4 + M203 This build focuses on horde killing but not recommended because it's completely useless against Scrakes. You should never play Demolitionist without the RPG anyway, it's just too powerful to skip.

MULTIPLE FLESHPOUNDS
That's why Demolitionist exists. When multiple FPs spawn, I strongly recommend welding a door after planting C4s inside. This way you'll be able to damage them while keeping them at bay, then easily kill them with the RPG when they break the door. When there is no door:

  • Double Fleshpounds: They need to be close to each other. Take advantage of chokepoints.

  • Triple Fleshpounds: Add some more damage to the Double Fleshpounds combo. Just improvise. Feel free to go overkill, Triple FPs is a once in a wave encounter.

IMPORTANT: There is a reason why we don't just spam C4. It has a 3 seconds damage cooldown. That means you need to wait for 3 seconds to detonate a second C4 after detonating one, otherwise it will deal half damage. I chain 2 C4s in most of combos because C4 has insane damage even when halved. But if you chain 3 or more C4s, you deal 50%, 25% and 12.5%... That means you're just wasting C4s after the 3rd one. Never chain more than 2. The damage will be minimal.

The purpose of this mechanic is to prevent you from killing the boss instantly.

GAMEPLAY VIDEOS
I joined some games in progress to record some late game action.
Both videos were recorded during the 10th wave of 6p Hell on Earth games.
  • Biotics Lab:

  • Containment Station:
SHARPSHOOTER
ADVANTAGES
  • Fastest for killing Large Zeds
  • Can attack from distance

DISADVANTAGES
  • Worst self defense against the horde
  • Has trouble with raged Large Zeds

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Railgun is set to auto-aim mode on default, don't forget to switch. Never use the Railgun on auto-aim mode because it deals half damage, which means you'll not be able to perform these combos. It's not that hard to aim manually anyway.

KILLING SCRAKES

BUILD 1
You need all the skills on the left to one-shot a Scrake. This build is the weakest against the horde. You can choose the SPX Centerfire instead of Magnum,
it's a bit more powerful but heavier and slower. Matter of a personal preference,
they're equally viable.
  • The easiest method. You need to crouch & stand still. Aim for the head.

BUILD 2
Compared to Build 1, this build is slower against Big Zeds but it's much more effective against anything else. This build can also be played with SPX + Crossbow + Magnum,
SPX replacing M14's job and Magnum as a bonus.
  • Option 1: Stun with the Crossbow first, then kill with M14 or SPX. Crossbow headshots are inconsistent for Scrakes, so the bolt should hit the body for a guaranteed stun but you can still try your luck with headshots.

  • Option 2: Just use the M14. It will stun halfway, then kill safely. This is easier if there are no other Zeds bothering you. If you're not safe, always use the Option 1.

KILLING FLESHPOUNDS

BUILD 1
Same as the Scrake killer Build 1. However one Railgun shot is not enough for a Fleshpound.
You can use the SPX Centerfire instead of Magnum.

  • Option 1: Safest and easiest method, but not ammo efficient. Requires 2 Railgun shots. Wait for the rage animation to end to get a guaranteed headshot.

  • Option 2: Somewhat harder, but the most ammo efficient method. You need 2 Magnum or SPX headshots first, then wait for the rage animation to end to get a guaranteed headshot.

BUILD 2
Same as the Scrake killer Build 2, but Crossbow is essential. SPX can do the job of M14 fine if you prefer, while also giving you enough free slot for a Magnum.
  • Option 1: Safest and easiest method, but less ammo efficient. Headshot with the Crossbow to stun first, then kill with M14 or SPX.

  • Option 2: More ammo efficient and fun method. 4 Crossbow headshots will kill quickly.
Don't let the Rackemup counter decay or you'll need an additional shot.

MULTIPLE FLESHPOUNDS
Using Build 1, Sharpshooter can take care of double Fleshpounds. You'll need a Freeze Grenade.
Unfortunately, he is not very effective against triple Fleshpounds.

  • Double Fleshpounds: Crouching and standing still, 2 Magnum or SPX headshots per Fleshpound then finish them off with the Railgun.

About SPX Centerfire: It's a great weapon and while it does the same job as the Magnum, it's better sometimes. If your Rackemup counter is at least 2, you can kill a Fleshpound with only 1 SPX headshot then 1 Railgun headshot, using build 1. I didn't post any videos of it since it replaces either M14 or Magnum, depending on the build.
GUNSLINGER
ADVANTAGES
  • The most flexible perk, can deal with anything
  • Moves fast, can dodge melee attacks

DISADVANTAGES
  • Has trouble with multiple Large Zeds
  • High ammo consumption

Gunslinger is one of the hardest to master, but it's also one of the most powerful. It's not that hard to aim for the head, the hard part is controlling the recoil. Once you get used to it, Gunslinger is very effective against anything.

BUILD
The only important skill is Rack 'em Up so choose the others as you like

KILLING SCRAKES

  • Deagles are enough to kill a Scrake, just keep the aim steady.

KILLING FLESHPOUNDS

  • The key is to trace the head movement during the rage animation. Deagles alone are not enough, both pairs of pistols recommended.
SUPPORT
ADVANTAGES
  • Can deal with raged Large Zeds
  • Very fast and ammo efficient kills

DISADVANTAGES
  • Penetration may enrage multiple Large Zeds
  • Has to get very close

Support has access to the cheapest Large Zed killing weapon, Double-barrel Boomstick. As a Tier 2 with the price tag of 650 Dosh, it can be bought on the 2nd wave and can still kill Large Zeds like a Tier 4 weapon.

BUILD
AA12 Auto Shotgun and Double-barrel Boomstick are the most important weapons of Support. You can stick with the SG500 or HZ12, or carry anything else you want. Salvo and Tight Choke skills are highly recommended since it will be much harder to kill Large Zeds without them.
KILLING SCRAKES
Double-barrel Boomstick alone can easily kill a Scrake, and it has insane stumble power.

  • 2 double shots to the head will do it. Just make sure you don't miss any pellets.

KILLING FLESHPOUNDS

  • Option 1: 3 well placed Boomstick double shots will kill it.

  • Option 2: 8 headshots with the AA12 until the Fleshpound starts running. Then a well placed Boomstick double shot will get the job done.

BONUS
- There are faster & more professional ways but I'm not that skilled with Support.
So here are some much more advanced Support combos by RykerZzZ if you're interested:
http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=912554889&searchtext=support
BERSERKER
ADVANTAGES
  • Can tank & parry hits
  • Can run very fast

DISADVANTAGES
  • Has to get very close
  • Needs healing often

KILLING SCRAKES
It's possible to kill Scrakes with 4 or 5 head hits using the Pulverizer or the Zweihander. However it's really hard to headshot with melee weapons so I'm here to recommend the other options. Zweihander is not very effective against any Large Zed.

BUILD
The Eviscerator is one of the best weapons in the game to kill Scrakes. You only need the Smash skill to make it useful. Deagle is also a very good off-perk weapon to blow up Husks on distance.

  • 2 headshots with the Eviscerator will kill the Scrake.

KILLING FLESHPOUNDS
Fleshpounds have higher head & body health so they require more effort.

BUILD 1
Some more skills and Deagle are required for killing Fleshpounds efficiently with the Eviscerator.
  • 2 headshots with the Deagle lowers the Fleshpound's head health enough for 3 boosted Eviscerator blades to kill it. By "boosted" I mean activating the Parry skill, you gain a 35% damage boost after parrying an attack.

BUILD 2
Fully explosive build against Fleshpounds.

  • 4 Pulverizer explosions are enough to kill after the RPG shot.

About Mace & Shield: It's a very good weapon but there are no effective combos for killing Large Zeds, you just gotta spam while parrying when needed. It's the best choice for the boss wave tho, it can block even ranged attacks.
SWAT
BUILD
You don't need any of the skills to kill a Scrake, so your skill choices don't matter. Only the 25% passive damage bonus is needed.

KILLING SCRAKES

  • A flashbang will stun the Scrake long enough for you to empty the whole magazine of Kriss.

KILLING FLESHPOUNDS

Unfortunately Swat is not capable of killing Fleshpounds efficiently. Flashbang can stun them so the Scrake killing method can be applied but one magazine will not be enough, so you'll take some damage. Kill the horde instead while a more capable perk is handling the Fleshpound.
COMMANDO
BUILD
You need all the high capacity magazine and damage skills to kill a Large Zed.
KILLING SCRAKES

  • Thanks to the Impact Rounds skill, the Scrake will stumble before it can reach you.

KILLING FLESHPOUNDS

Unfortunately Commando is not capable of killing Fleshpounds efficiently. The Scrake killing method can be applied but one magazine will not be enough, so you'll take some damage. Kill the horde instead while a more capable perk is handling the Fleshpound. If it's the Demolitionist, you can assist with some of your grenades.
MEDIC
NOTE: A Medic should never have to face a Large Zed alone anyway, and it's not his job at all. But still it's possible to kill a Scrake if needed in an emergency. Medic's job is to heal their teammates and kill the horde while no healing is needed. I don't recommend the Combat Medic skills unless your team is fine with less healing. The Supporting skills are too good for survival.

BUILD
The extra damage and magazine size are important for killing a Scrake. If you have the Acidic Rounds, the Medic Rifle will cause Scrake to panic. This can give you some time if you need to reload, but it's not essential.
KILLING SCRAKES

  • It's possible to kill the Scrake using only the Medic Rifle but you must not miss. I prefer to use a combination of both guns to guarantee the kill. Thanks to stumble, you can kill a Scrake before it can reach you. The important thing is recoil control. Medic weapons have the most recoil.

KILLING FLESHPOUNDS

Unfortunately Medic is not capable of killing Fleshpounds efficiently. The Scrake killing method can be applied but one magazine will not be enough, so you'll take some damage. You should be healing the team while Large Zeds are around so focus on healing instead.
FIREBUG
KILLING SCRAKES

KILLING FLESHPOUNDS

Yes. Even after the buff, Firebug is still garbage against Large Zeds according to my experience.
It's the best against the horde tho, Firebug is a dedicated trash cleaner. You just gotta stay away from the Large Zeds and try not to enrage them.

Hey there! If anyone is looking for an updated large zed takedowns list, I've just released a video guide containing many combos to take out scrakes and fleshpounds, for all perks:

https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2237757871

If you have any questions or feedback I'd be happy to answer in the guide itself. Also, thanks Brownstone for this great guide. It has served the community well for a very long time.

Oh this looks promising.

Against Skrakes with Firebug:
Use microwave gun alt-fire like it's the only fire mode. It can and will ragdoll him if its done rapidly enough, at which point just hosing him down will kill him. Its doable, but it eats through your ammo reserves and its not at all efficient.

Against Fleshpound with Firebug:
Mash the alt fire if he's on a teammate or on you to get some space. Also, start running and hope the demolitionist/gunslinger/sharpshooter is paying attention.

One thing bout SWAT: You need both your perk dmg bonus and perk magazine bonus . You need to be at least lvl 10 or so before your Kriss can house enough bullets to kill a 6 man Scrake

@jinayontagaza I don't get it, what do you mean by "alone"? Do you mean solo play or do you mean when your teammates are dead?

If you mean solo play then it's not taken into consideration, loadouts and skills are useless in solo play since most weapons get the job done anyway. This guide was made for 6 players Hell on Earth.

It only works when survivalist is alone. That's why it's called the SURVIVALIST. i can survive playing that alone in HoE

That doesn't work at all for 6p HoE. The zeds have more hp with increasing difficulty and players.
