This will be a guide on how to get your first pet, which will be a wompit. You can do this near the start of the game fairly easily.

What do pets do?

Pets help you fight during battle. if you attack an enemy or take damage from an enemy your pet will start attacking it. Along with that pets give symbiotic effects. These are passive effectes you get just by having a pet. Along with those two things while in its nest you can use the pet to make a meterial you can only get from that pet. For example wompits will produce wompit milk

quest you need to do before hand

First you will need to get to powaapol ( a small town early on in the game) and talk to Auly.

He will give you a quest to kill diffrent wompits that will appear randomly while in the savana.
The final wompit will be saucy.

After defeating saucy it will drop a wompit egg, pick it up and juicebox will give you a scematic for a wompit nest and give you a quest to build it.

after getting the egg you will need to craft the nest in the skinnery. After you do that place it down and it will have a five minuet timer

wait five minuets and slap it and it will hatch and then ask you to name it.

and now you have your very own wompit.

Correction:
Yes, it is possible to get the egg AND the nest recipe before even reaching Powaapol. Eggs drop from the Wompit Heifers and Bulls, whether sterling or regular, it just comes down to RNG luck. I got mine from a regular Wompit Heifer, the first one I ever killed. The nest blueprint drops from Sawgrass I think, after you build your first Skinnery. Defeating the three named Sterling Wompits to complete the quest in Powaapol will actually reward you with the recipe for the garland that is used to upgrade your pet wompit.

You can get only 1 pet for each creature on Wanope. They only drop from the medium size and up (anything but the teny tiny animals) but has a higher drop chance the more powerful the creature. Hope this helps!

I believe you can get as many pets as you want, I dont think there is a limit

Well you're both right, technically the egg drop is scripted so that it always falls from saucy but it also has a drop chance off of wompits

Test it out if you want to, i try to purposefully avoid doing the missions at first, but maybe i accidentally did the quest, im just telling you what i saw in an attempt to help

You can actually get the pet before powaapol, i got an egg from killing the big wompits, so maybe its possible to get it that way?
