By DrPikachu64
Tired of getting nothing but gold, bones, and other junk from the "Last Enemy Chest"? Learn the ins and outs of Xanadu Next's looting system, and find out which monster to kill last, how much of a fight they're gonna give you, and the potential contents of the chest they'll leave behind (if you don't accidentally burn it up with a fireball first)!

Preface
Can you Xanadu?!

Xanadu Next is a 2005 PC game developed by Nihon Falcom, brought over across the ocean eleven years later by XSEED Games and Marvelous USA, and has been compared to a lot of other games: Diablo, The Legend of Zelda, Ys, Dark Souls, Vagrant Story, just to name a few. This guide for Xanadu Next seeks to make readily available a comprehensive guide when it comes to the chest that spawns when you kill the last enemy in a room, what could be inside, and what you can do to make it work in your favor. While I was at it, I added stats into the tables to make it a pretty decent Bestiary guide as well.

This guide is currently a work-in-progress, and will be updated as I play through the game and uncover the information I need. I decided to publish this now instead of later for those who may be in immediate need of what this guide covers. I will list each monster by region in the order you first visit each region. Sub-areas will divide the list further as required. A list of items will be provided above the Change Log sorted by item type.

The Change Log at the bottom will reflect any and all updates I make to this guide, and will include upcoming sections to be added later on. If I'm missing any items in any of the regions I currently have listed on here, let me know in the comments below!
Just remember: I'm concerned about only the regions and sub-areas that are currently listed on this guide. DO NOT send me anything further beyond that point in the game; you'll just be wasting your time writing the comment and my time reading it.

Disclaimer: This guide will assume you are either currently playing the game or have played it before, and you are familiar with the terminology it uses. All item and enemy names will be derived from the official XSEED localization.
What are "Monster Chests"?
The "Monster Chests" mechanic is available from the moment you win your first fight, but if you're playing Xanadu Next for the first time, you might not know what's really going on unless you talk to the NPC Godfrey after the events in the Back-Alley Ruins...or you're reading this guide.

When you defeat the last enemy in a room, a chest will appear. The contents of the chest will differ depending on what happened to be the last monster you killed, and each monster has their own list of loot. In a way, this makes each battle a puzzle of sorts, in which you must quickly decide which monster you're going to kill last, and keep yourself positioned on the battlefield so you can carry things out in the order you want. Usually you will find varying amounts of gold in Monster Chests, but sometimes you might get an item instead, and that's where this guide comes in.

Be aware, however, that defeating the last enemy with magic spells WILL NOT make a Monster Chest appear. A Monster Chest will still appear if the enemy is defeated with a weapon skill and/or while your weapon is enchanted with an elemental Passive Skill like "Searing Blade" or "Jolting Blade". You should also be careful not to hit the Monster Chest with any magic, or it will be destroyed on contact.

Can you influence what might be in the chest? Yes you can! If you can find a Guardian named "Zwerg" in the Eternal Maze—more specifically, the section you uncover after your short jaunt through Eaglet Mountain—this is your go-to Guardian for rare drops, as its effect is increasing the drop rate of items over gold. As with all Guardians, you'll need to feed it some experience to increase the effects, which in this case is your item drop chance.
This improves your chances of getting a rare item like a piece of equipment if only because it's more likely you're getting an item in general. You need to fight monsters to get those chests anyway, so you might as well level Zwerg up while you're at it and improve that item drop chance even further!

So to summarize, here are some tips to help you get the most out of Monster Chests:
  • To get any items a specific monster may drop, you need to make sure that particular monster is the last monster you defeat!
  • Gold will almost always be the most common thing you find in Monster Chests! (I seem to have found one exception to this rule, but maybe I'm just "lucky"...)
  • Magic destroys Monster Chests! Don't defeat the last monster with magic or let a stray spell hit the chest!
  • Weapon Skills, Active or Passive, are Monster Chest-friendly!
  • Zwerg is the Guardian you'll want to bond with if you're hunting for rare drops!

The bestiary "cards" used in this guide follow a structure similar to what you would see in the game, with a few additions...

1. Enemy name and type. Bosses and minibosses' names are bordered in red, and summoned enemies' are in gray.
2. The enemy's HP.
3. The enemy's stats. Summoned enemies will always award 0 Exp and Gold upon defeat, and never leave a Monster Chest behind, as they will disappear instantly when their master is defeated.
  • Lv—The enemy's level.
  • Exp—The amount of base Experience awarded upon the enemy's defeat. The true amount of Exp is scaled by comparing the enemy's Lv. to your own (i.e. if your level is higher you will gain less Exp than what is shown).
  • Gold—The total amount of Gold that is dropped upon the enemy's defeat in the form of coins. Exp is automatically given to the player, while Gold must be picked up instead.
  • Fire/Ice/Thdr—The enemy's elemental resistance. Negative values denote a weakness to an element, while positive values mean the enemy is resistant to that element. If the value is 100%, the enemy is immune to all damage of that element. If the value is 150% or higher, all attacks of that element will heal the enemy instead of damaging it.
  • ATC—The enemy's physical attack strength.
  • MGC—The enemy's magical attack power. Enemies with 0 MGC rely solely on physical attacks.
  • DEF—The enemy's physical attack resistance.
  • RES—The enemy's magical attack resistance.
  • ACC—The enemy's accuracy of physical attacks. If the player has a shield equipped, physical enemy attacks that don't miss may still be blocked.
  • EVA—The enemy's ability to evade physical attacks. The rate of evasion is lowered if the enemy is attacked from behind.
4. The possible contents of a Monster Chest dropped by the enemy.
  • Chest Gold—The total amount of Gold that is dropped once the Monster Chest is opened. This amount is separate from the Gold normally dropped upon the enemy's defeat.
  • Items—The most common contents are at the top of the list, while the rarest are at the bottom. This order is listed in "perceived rarity" and is not definite; it is simply an observation of how often I myself received these items. Listed items with an added "*" cannot be bought at the shops in Harlech Village. There are some items however, such as the Magic Potion, that can be bought from Agnès.

So if I want the magic achievement I can just farm this magic from monsters and buy the rest from the shop?

Thank you for this guide. Most useful.

Rest assured, I'm trying to get a good workaround set up that doesn't have me split up the information into just another form of "unreadable".

And I hope to get the rest of the areas done soon as well!

You might have noticed already, but the table's dimensions don't quite fit with the guide index in the way. Is there some way you can make it fit? Or is there a way I can get rid of the guide index?
