Before we start...
The absolute first thing you should do if you are having a problem with any steam game is to verify the integrity of the game cache.

Right click the game in your library > Properties > LOCAL FILES > VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE...

If you already tried that, read on.
The Error
The fix in this guide should work for you if you are experiencing these issues:
  • Gray or flickering enemy bullets
  • Incorrectly colored or flickering friendly bullets
  • Missing colored player outline
  • Frame drops and lag spikes

Notice that the red player has no red outline and the sword is a pale blue. Notice the enemy bullets are gray.
The Solution
For me and other players this issue was caused by the latest patch of the game which apparently tested some Playstation 4 compatability for Jamestown+. To fix you simply roll the game back to the legacy build which does not have these weird graphical issues.

You do this by:
  • Right clicking on Jamestown in your Library and selecting properties

  • Selecting the legacy build in the BETAS tab
Alternative Solution
In a recent forum post a user found a new solution to make the game run properly. This works on the latest version of windows 10 and uses the compatability options. He found that if he ran the game and then opened task manager and went to properties:

And then set the game to run in limited resolution:

The game worked fine and they could select fullscreen in game as normal. You could also try other compatability options in this menu.
Didn't work?
If this fix did not work for you then you have a few options.

If the graphical issues persist then it is likely the problem is being caused by your graphics card. Some users have reported in the forums that driver updates can cause graphical issues. Rolling your drivers back to an older version could fix the issue for you.

If frame rate issues persist it is possible your computer is having difficulty running the game. This game runs at a high framerate and has many objects on screen at once, it can be quite taxing. Make sure that your computer isn't running any background tasks such as defender, update or defrag (using task manager). These tasks can hog resources and cause games to slow down, often without you even knowing they started up.
Conclusion
The legacy build should work perfectly for most people having these issues.

I've seen new players complaining that the game is broken and dead. I've seen returning players annoyed that the game they loved playing before is now bugged. I hope these people can come back and enjoy this great game the way its meant to be.

Thanks for reading.

I just had this issue. i resolved it by resetting the catalyst control settings to "application controlled" and then set mipmapping to highest. Seemed to fix it right away.

I do not now if these steps will work for background issues but I suggest trying. Also I will update the guide with a fix offered in a discussion post recently that also may help

I had a very similar issue. What fixed it for me was swithing my ati video card settings in graphics profile from Image Quality to Perfomance.
