Rogue Wizards Gauntlet Guide

This guide include almost everything you need to play in the gauntlet mode.

Aware Dangerous Level
we say a level is dangerous means you don't have enough defence or damage to pass this floor. it can easily judged by followings:

Lack of Damage
count your turns cost on kill a monster. the more it takes, the lower your damage.
ranged weapon > 4 turns
melee weapon > 2 turns

Lack of Defence
count how many turns you can sustain with full hp. low value means your defence is not enough.
monsters : < 20 turns
mini boss / maugris : < 10 turns

Tips
  1. DAMAGE IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN DEFENCE!!!
  2. low damage means long battle, you will suffer more damage too. use your small/weapons overcome it temporary.
  3. low defence means you should always use teleport(regroup) to leave battle & recover.
  4. Generally your should consider more low damager problem on crawl dungeons. only consider defence problem more on boss fight.
Avoid Death
  • Patience! More Patience, Patience is the first rule to survive in a one life game.
  • FREE LIFE SPRING: heal statue will recover some turns after. enhance status will give u full hp everytime u visited even it used. and you can go ascend to visit them again & again without waste any potions
  • potions are quite important so don't waste it. yeah, potion count is your real HP, 5 means you are healthy, 2 means you are in danger.
  • as said in <Aware Dangerous Level>, when you damage/defence is low, use your small weapons/skills to kill annoy monsters. don't waste your potions.
  • if above all still can't make you move on. your last chance is <Wander>, it's boring, so i will explain this on the last chapter.
  • barrel may explode & treasure chest can be a mimics with high damage. so take care when you hp is low (i payed for it T^T)
Small Weapons
small weapons are Wands/Dagger/Shuriken, extremely high damge but have limit charge of use.
  • ALWAYS KEEP THEM!
    they are quite useful in boss fight or your damage/defence cann't keep up with the monster growth.
  • wands will recover when it level up. but it's only 5 charges @_@, i only successed once when i got a 20 charges legendary wands from a chest.
  • DISCARD IT when it cann't kill monster in one shot anymore
Weapon Choice
Melee Weapons (2% exp per hit)
  • Sword : none
  • Staff : none ??
  • Axe : one hand, aoe damage, it will attack your point field & two adjacent fields in the 8 fields around you.

  • Lance : two hands, it will auto attack like a axe hit the field in front of you along the direction your move. for example: if there are 3 monster stand in a line 1 tile away from you, you can just one move with 3 attacks.
    BTW: if you PASSIVE moved by some knockback skills or slip by ice storm, lance will also attack too!!!
Ranged Weapons(1% exp per hit)
  • Bow : double hand, ranged attack, about 1/3 damage to melee weapons.
  • Chakram : ranged attack, even more low damage than the bow. the power of charkram is its attack will bounce between 3 enemies like Luna's <moon glaive>, each enemy will have chance to trigger the on hit weapons skills.

Tips
  • your should always chose Chakram + Lance as your weapons. charkram will trigger multi skills to help your sweep monsters. lance will help you kill strong melee monsters.
  • BASE DAMAGE IS IMPORTANT, damage is depend on your gear level. so don't hesitate change your current diving low damage good affix weapon to high base damage but bad affix weapons when you found you are lack of damage.
Gear Affix/Talisman
here are valuable affix sorted by place.
All
  • Gear rank + (not weapon) : gear level will boost all affix power. i never seen chakram/lance rank boost affix in this game...maybe the developers also know this two weapon is powerful.
  • Special items found : i like it.
  • exp when damaged : if you found recover statu in dungeons, you can use this affix.
  • attributes boost : power/swiftness/stamina is just to wear the gears, almost useless in this game.
Helms

  • shield when hit : though it's trigger chance is low, but it's provide shields points with no cost, active cast a shield cost 6 sprits.
  • swarm when hit : the another buff in the game, high nature damage, high trigger chance. extremely useful on boss fight
Armors
  • regen on turns : the key affix when wander to recover, you MUST have at least one armor with this affix.
Weapons(on hit skills)

  • explosion >> others: explosion have the highest damage(Lv 10 over 1K damage), large aoe & provide vision.
  • aoe skills : singularity is the best. singularity + any debuff field skills means clear...
  • debuff field skills: like burn, electric field, freeze. boss & monsters will leave debuff fields when hit, so it's means a turn they won't hit you.
  • slience: interesting skill, maybe useful on boss fight.
Weapons
  • critical chance: critial chance is so precious in this game, skills also affect by critical chance too..
  • critical damage: if you got a weapon with 20%+ chance deal 250%+ damage...you will understand
  • on hit skills: as above.
Shields
  • block chance: this is the only thing you should concern.

Amulet/Ring
  • damage: the only way you can get damage aside weapons is here.
  • XXX skill +: better than not.

Boots
  • extra turn: need explain?


Gear Level & affixs
  • GEAR LEVEL AFFECT EVERYTHING
  • the power of the affix scale with the gear level , skills level also determined by it not your chacter skill level.
  • gear can level up 3 times & get new affix when it's exp reach 100%. Enhance statu does the same thing. gear cann't get more than 6 affixs (3 from level, 3 from gear quality or enhance)
  • all gear exp can get just by walking in dugeons except weapons & shields. shields gain only by being attacked. weapons can also gain exp when attack barrels & illusions & stones summoned by the first earth skill stalagmites.
  • Diving(3) > Legendary(2) > Rare(1) > Common(0), every quality up means a affix, also slots means a affix you can chose. don't superstitious diving gear. if you have enough Talisman, 3 slot common gear == Diving gear.
  • gear can obtain same kind of affix once. but you can insert the same affix talisman into slots. some will stack(regen on turns), some will replace the stronger one(extra action every XXX turns)

Skill Tree build

  • sentinel: the most poweful skills in the game, instant; only 2 cost; good aoe damage; passive taunt(all the monsters/boss will attack it first)
  • regoup: instant leave combat, the recover hp is so slow so you cann't expect it to recover, it's used for escape. level this up for longer tiles & litter more hp to avoid you use this skill but unlucky still in boss's range & got hit.
  • ignite: though you need level 15+ & 20 skill points to obtain this skill, but it worth. instant high aoe damage with 3 cost.
  • shield: better than not. i have should have a way to spend my ice runes.
  • stalagmites: just 1 point, i use it to boost weapon exps.
Monsters Fight
Fight basic
  1. almost all the monsters can do two actions in one turn, but you can only do one...how sad.
  2. make sure your damage is enough to use this tactic, if you damage is low. tactic helps nothing.

FireBall Octopus/Thunder Bird/Mud Golem(Ranged cast with field debuffs)
they are the most dangerous monsters, most damager you received come from them; just stand still, use ranged weapons kill them first & asap. they are also the hardest mini boss. especially the mud golem.

Exposive Octopus(explode when come close)
user melee weapons can kill it in oneshot, keep 2 tiles away from it; if you are only 1 tiles away, move back 1 tiles. when it come close ,finish it. if you can't finish him in oneshot. summon a sentinal maybe also do the job.

Acid Slime(explode when death)
if you use melee weapons to kill them, after the last shot, run along one direction move 3 turns will avoid damage. if you cann't escape just stand still don't move will suffer the least damage.

Stone Golem(high physical defence, high physical damage, 100% knockback)
it's hard to kill him use ranged weapons without skills trigged, user sword with high block chance shield is good. lance will reduce your defence.

Golden thief(my treasures!!)
if he is close to you, user lance hit & run till kill him. if he is far away, try to freeze him & hunt him down.

Demon Warrior(summon axes will explode)
maybe annoy early game, but if you have a strong charkram they won't be problems.

Harpy(Silence, teleport monsters)
in most of time harpy is a joke. she will teleport each other, silence you, but don't attack...but beware she have the only skill prevent you escape from battle, silence. it's quite dangerous when
maugris summon a harpy & silence you.

Griffin(Shield, ice storm)
shield is annoying, but griffin is weak at fire. use fire skills can kill them quickly , also aware of ice storm slippy effect, it may pull you into the monster groups & receive heavy damage, i met once with 4 octopus explode...
Mini Boss & Maugris Fight
  1. most of time boss fight is quite easy if you have enough defence.
  2. if you met FireBall Octopus/Thunder Bird/Mud Golem, take care. they will easy destory your sentinel & deal huge damage to you.
  3. Maugris have long vision & attack range, so level up regroup to ensure a escape.
Pets & Teamates
  1. you should always consider owl or dragon as your teamates, they are all ranged attacks..
  2. dragon even better because my build lack of cosmic damage, also dragon midi with the banish skill means a instant kill annoying monsters.
  3. if you regroup level is not too high & your pet has engaged, your pet maybe not teleport with you.
  4. pets only recover health when you drink potions or after you level up for a while. so let pets take less damage.
Wander
What is wander?
when you stuck in the dungeons and cann't move on, you have to repeat some "Grind" things to move on. it brings nonfluency game experience.
in this game, most of time it appears to be walking in the dungeons. i call it wander.

The propose of wander?
  1. Recover Life
  2. Gain Gear EXP
  3. Defeat monsters.

To make you feels better when in wander, i provide some interesting small games.


Chop Chop Chop(Quick Recover Wander)
1. get a heath regen gear set. body have regen affix & others have body rank + affix.
2. user a sword, the attack of sword looks better
3. Force Attack the ground(Just use your right mouse click the ground will do it).
4. Quick click your mouse to let the turn pass. and you will found your hp regens slowly..
5. press space won't make it, also this game won't increase your weapon exp.

Whac-A-Mole(Gain Weapon experience)
1. Go to a safe place
2. release the first earth skill stalagmites.
3. smash the stones with your weapon!
4. this game will increase your weapon exp, good for melee weapons, you can 12% exp per skill release. not good for chakram. also will small boost other gears exp because you walked.

Tac Nuke Strike(kill monsters without any damage)
1. you need a ranged weapon with aoe skills & provide vision. the only three choices : boulder, singularity, explosion. explosion is the best.
2. just walk along the wall step by step, until you found some monsters.
3. go back 1 tiles. until you lost monster's vision.
4. just force attack the ground in the edge of your vision, it's like starcraft ghost's skill <Tac Nuke Strike>

5. explosion trigger, monster won't move till death _^_

6. this is a common vision tricks in roguelike games. you can see the vision change when you cast a fire skill on ground. if you have the regen armor, you will also recover some hp after turns.
The Most Important
ALWAYS KEEP LEVEL UP YOUR GEAR!!!
PUT YOUR MAX EXPERIENCE ITEM IN YOUR BAG NOT IN YOUR BODY!!

  • you will gain gear experience by walking, attacking.
  • if you always wear your max level, strongest gear sweep dungeon. the experience will lost, it's a total waste.
  • maybe current a lv40 rare item is not as good as your lv30 diving max affix item. but if you level up the lv40 rare item, it will get new affix, maybe some good affix. more affix means more chance to get better equipments.
  • there are no a gear you can wear until the ends. you should always update your gear. so if you don't level up the new high level blank gear, you will easily met the lack defence/damage problems.
Tips
  • always try to get the kill all monster & discover treasure challenge, it brings huge exps.
  • Key Broke is quite annoying, if it happens, you can go the next level to get the keys & back to finish your challenge, it will cause new level treasure chanllenge can't finished. so just don't open any chest in the next level.
  • Force attack(right mouse on ground) is quite useful, not only in wander, also can reveal the hidden monsters. but unfortunately there is no way to avoid treasure chest monster mimic's attack. even you know it's a mimic(when you finish the treasure challenge but you see another treasure chest...)
  • Get a regen armor asap in early game, it's the last line for your survive.
  • lots of skills provide vision, like a burn on ground. it may cause monster attack. if you played other roguelike games like Tome4, you can easily escape the battle without teleport. for this game, remember move 1 tiles per mouse click in hard levels is a good habit.
  • you can find some interesting things like if you happen trigger a banish on a burn tile, the fire will absorb into the void too.
  • maybe it's a bug, i have two gain XXX experience affix gear in body. one body brings 500, anther shield brings 400, and i got 100 exp...

About wands ; You can develope some of them into fantastic weapons, with recharge after so and so many turns, and lots more use than 5 times.
My best until now, is one with 24 uses, and recharge after 29 steps :goodie::goodie:

Chakrams are boosted by the Blade +1 weapon/armor affixes. Thought you'd want to know.

@Shadowd33 i am sure the key point make u think the legendary geat is hard is your low defence not your little poor stamina...if u stuck, just Wander to level up your gear level, it's boring but better than death....

So what do i do after i reached level 100 and can't progress anymore?
oh and late game you want stamina up high as well, the legendary geat at lvl 100 is usually around 136 stam and you'll never get close if you focus x2 points into power.

@Jargonaut, let me see...okay attributes in gauntlet mode is not the key way. i suggest keep the points, add when you cann't wear some gear. if you have lots of them, maximum your damage , average between power & finesse.

Can you please tell us what attribute to choose : Power, Finesse or Stamina?
When we level we get 4 points everytime, so how do we allocate them? 1, 1, 1 and a random 1 to which attribute?

@Hextravert, thanks, i really appreciate the walking -> gain gear exp -> new affix mechanism. in most of roguelikes walking is useless.but in this game yourself is the biggest treasure chest.
