I truly don't know what you mean by these special merchants, nor about the black/white shards. Is this in the 1.9 English version?

You might want to complement your guide with information about the shop in the final dungeon. There are four merchants to unlock, each one requires a certain amount of Black Shards to unlock. There's also a fountain with water which completely restores your party (even revives injured characters) and works as a savepoint but requires a White Shard each time it's used.
