RP suggestions for Sentinels
By Nikos Phobodeimos
Have you ever tried to think about the protagonists' backgrounds and how they'd interact? Did you ever imagine your player character with a different reason to join the Sentinels (other than the bland "I join them for the wages" mentioned in the player character's diary)?

This thread examines some possible motivations for joining, as well as coherent squad members and loadouts for the protagonist.

Note that some of the suggestions will probably result in a very high (or even impossible) difficulty. Still, they can be a challenge: see how far you can go in the campaign with such a self-imposed handicap.

Roleplaying in Sentinels? Why?
Have you ever tried to think about the protagonists' backgrounds and how they'd interact? Did you ever imagine your player character with a different reason to join the Sentinels (other than the bland "I join them for the wages" mentioned in the player character's diary)?

This guide examines some possible motivations for joining, as well as coherent parties and loadouts for the protagonists.

Note that some of the suggestions will probably result in a very high (or even impossible) difficulty. Still, they can be a challenge: see how far you can go in the campaign with such a self-imposed handicap.

Why S3 only and not the original S2? For two reasons:
  • S3 has a feature which allows to change your squad members' clothes. This appearance customisation is a major part of this roleplaying suggestion.
  • S3 is set after WW2 and its party members are from both sides of the former conflict, which would logically involve potential interesting interactions between them, especially since some of their backstories implies nationality-based antipathy (more on this later). S2 offers much less freedom in this area, since all available party members are from the same side.

NB: Some of the examples will require suits and/or guns from BlunterMod[www.strategycore.co.uk]. Also, some suggested thematic loadouts may be impossible to gather without cheating or grinding the random encounters.
Main character's roleplay
As the team leader, the main character should be the only one to speak to major NPCs and buy supplies. He/She also should be the one who carries most of the quest-related items.

If you want your main player character to act like a commissioned officer, the most fitting class is male Soldier. You can dress him with an officer uniforms from his own country, then equip him with a set pistol and a SMG used by said country. On the field, he should stay behind, not be the first to enter unscouted areas, and not expose himself too much (to not risk being killed), which is why Grenadiers, Engineers or Scouts don't fit the archetype at all (so: no silenced gun). To limit risks, the officer should avoid to get himself in combat, unless in support of his men, or if he is surprised by the enemy. Of course, you can choose to disregard those behaviour suggestions in order to RP as an impulsive hothead.

Note that there's no officer uniforms available for female characters (except the stripper outfit Sentinel Officer Uniform). USSR was the only WW2 country to have women serving on the field, so you should avoid the "former CO RP" if you have a German, US or British female player character.

If you don't intend to be an actual officer, then dress and equip your avatar as you like: Sentinel uniforms, private or NCO uniforms, partisan clothes, civilian clothes... The list goes on.
Who would hate who? Instinctive antipathy inside the team
Here, we examine the very strong antipathy that some party members should feel toward some of the others.

  • Bob: When he was away fighting during World War One, German troops lived in his house (he's from the area who was invaded by Germany during the war) and eventually slaughtered his family when they left. In the game, his lines show how enthousiastic he is to have his revenge by killing German soldiers. Thank to his hatred of Germans, he would probably refuse to be in the same room as Axel, Dani, Fritz, Gunnar, Klaus, Reggie, not to speak of obeying to a German team leader (in his/her own file, the player character is explicitely stated to be a WW2 hero). Cooperation with Reggie would be especially problematic, since Reggie is himself a WW1 veteran.
  • Holly: Born in Northern Ireland, she's the daughter of a high-ranking Irish Volunteers[en.wikipedia.org] member who has been hung by the British after the failure of the 1916 Easter Rebellion[en.wikipedia.org], which inspired her a strong hatred of Britain (that's why she joined the German Army in 1939, to fight against the British), which would probably extend to the whole Commonwealth. She then would refuse to work with Abala, Doug, Gator, Kate, Oz, Rowdy, and especially Elf (she's another Northern Irish character, as well as obeying a British player character. Anyway, Holly being a British citizen who fought for the German during the war (combined with her being the daughter of a famous Irish rebel) should make any British player character reluctant to recruit her, being suspicious of her loyalty to a team leader of British nationality.
  • Paco and Ramos: They were in opposing sides during the Spanish Civil War[en.wikipedia.org] (Paco fought for the Nationalist side, Ramos was a pacifist sympathetic to the Republicans). Them being both in the same team could create some tension.
  • Sook: He grew up in Japanese-occupied Korea[en.wikipedia.org] (note that he was born right before the occupation started, and thus has witnessed it during most of his life until then), a very harsh time; he notably had his elder brother conscripted in Imperial Japanese Army and his sister enslaved as a "confort woman[en.wikipedia.org]". This experience would probably leave him with a durable hatred of the Japanese. So: don't use Sook in a team including Toki and/or Kenko.
  • Zail: Initially a recruit of the British Indian Army, he switched side after being captured by the Germans in North Africa partly because he didn't like how the British were treating him, and partly because he sensed that joining the Wehrmacht would be a chance to end British domination on India. Then, he logically dislikes any other character from the Commonwealth, and would refuse to work with Doug, Elf, Gator, Kate, Oz, Rowdy, and especially Abala (another recruit of the British Indian Army, who remained loyal to Great Britain), as well as obeying a British player character. Anyway, Zail being a turncoat having defected from British Army should make any British player character reluctant to recruit him, being unsure of his loyalty to a team leader of British nationality.
  • Olli and Taras: Were on opposing sides during the Soviet invasion of Finland.
Who would like who? Affinity between comrades in arms
On the other hand, the colourful backstory of available party members may suggest some of them eventually bonded with others thank to similar experiences in their past. Merely belonging to same country and having fought on the same side during WW2 helps, but this section also imagine other reasons. Here are suggestions for such friendship.

Same country (NB: real citizenship only; foreign volunteers not included) and same WW2 allegiance:
  • Canada: Gator, Kate.
  • France: Bob, Yves.
  • Germany: Axel, Dani, Fritz, Gunnar, Klaus, Reggie.
  • Italy: Carm, Rocco.
  • Japan: Kenko, Toki.
  • United Kingdom: Doug, Elf, Rowdy.
  • United States: Kate, L.A., Nessie, Viper.
  • USSR: Oleg, Taras, Zinaida.

Other reasons which could make party members become friends:
  • Gator, Bob, Carm, Kenko, Doug, and Nessie could bond thanks to their past as WW1 veterans from the same side. As the son of a British soldier killed during the Great War, Rowdie could belong to this circle, too.
  • Mike is a former policeman, while Jerzey is a reformed mobster and Gunnar is a reformed teen delinquent.
  • Holly and Zail are united by their hatred of the British. Ahmad could also be part of their "UK occupies my country" club.
  • What do Arvid, Bob, Jerzey, Matt, Ramos, Sook, and Yves have in common? All of them were fighting against either Axis military occupation or an Axis sympathetic government in their own country.
  • Being respectively Finnish and Lithuanian, Olli and Tadas have personal reasons to dislike the USSR, since it invaded Finland in 1939 and annexed Lithuania in 1940.
  • Taras was a Soviet military advisor sent to Republican Spain during the Spanish Civil War, so Ramos and him were on the same side.
Suggestions of thematically coherent teams
NB: Some team suggestions may seem contradictory (Dani being suggested in both the Commie team and in the Western German former Axis one? Yves being suggested as an USA/UK available agent and a communist one in the same time? Did Gari fled Hungary when the Soviets invaded or did he remained there and served the new masters of the country? etc.). That's because I used my imagination to fill the blank in their biographies (as long as it doesn't go against was it explicitely written), especially about their post-WW2 fate. You can basically read this as some sort of Schrödinger biographies: each alternative is true until you choose one.
Team Great Britain
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves: Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

The player character is an officer sent by the British government to investigate on an obscure threat. Having joined the Sentinels, the protagonist gathers a team of loyal subjects of the British crown among the Sentinels' members.
  • Player Character: British man, Soldier.
  • Team: Up to five hired party members. Any Commonwealth citizen except Holly and Zail: Abala (Indian), Doug (British), Elf (British), Gator (Canadian), Kate (Canadian), Oz (Australian), Rowdy (British), as well as foreign recruits of British Army Matt (Yougoslavian), Arvid (Norwegian), and Jerzey (Polish). In addition, apart from them, a single slot could be filled with one of those characters: Bob (French), Carm (Italian; whereas she joined the new Allied-aligned Italian government in 1943 or still fighted for the Axis is unknown), L.A. (American), Nessie (American), Ramos (Spanish), Rocco (Italian - cf. Carm), Sook (Korean-born American recruit), Viper (American), and Yves (French); basically, anyone who is nor a former Axis operative neither originates from the Communist bloc (for safety and loyalty reasons).
  • Clothing: UK Officer Uniform or UK Commandos Officer Uniform for the player character, various other British uniforms and/or the default Allied Soldier/Scout/Medic uniform for the team members.
  • Loadout: Any gun used by the Tommies. The player character should carry a pistol (either a Webley revolver, a M1911A1, a Browning Hi-Power, a Smith & Wesson Model 10, or a variant of Mauser C96) and a Sten SMG (or a Thompson), as well as 36M MkI grenades (the famous "Mills bombs"). The rest of the team can use items such as Fairbairn-Sykes knife, Smatchet, Kukri, Webley, M1911A1, Browning Hi-Power, Mauser C96, Smith & Wesson Model 10, Welrod, Sten SMGs, Thompson SMGs, Sterling SMG, Lee-Enfield, De Lisle carbine, Lewis, Bren, PIAT, Bazooka, 36M MkI grenades, etc.
Team USA
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

Same premise with a mostly American team.
  • Player Character: American man, Soldier.
  • Team: Up to five hired party members. Any American citizen are accepted: L.A., Kate (has both Canadian and American nationalities), Nessie and Viper, as well as Sook (Korean-born recruit in US Army). In addition, apart from them, missing slots could be filled with the Commonwealth guys and any of the non-British operative there're allowed to recruit. Also, they may let Fritz join them (he's born in the USA and lived there until he was 13).
  • Clothing: US Officer Uniformfor the player character, various other US uniforms and/or the default Allied Grenadier uniform for the team members.
  • Loadout: Any gun used by the GIs. The player character should carry a pistol (either a M1911A1, a Browning Hi-Power, or a Smith & Wesson Model 10) and a Thompson SMG, as well as F1 grenades. The rest of the team can use items such as KABAR, M3 knife, M1911A1, Browning Hi-Power, Smith & Wesson Model 10, Welrod, Thompson SMGs, M3A1, M1903 Springfield, M1 Garand, De Lisle carbine, M1941 Johnson rifle, Lewis, BAR, M1941 Johnson LMG, Bazooka, F1 grenades, etc.
Team Commies
Krasnaja Armija vsekh silnej!

Idem, but from the other side. The USSR sent an agent to investigate the threat, who gathered a team of agents sharing loyality to the communist ideal.
  • Player Character: Russian man, Soldier.
  • Team: Up to five hired party members. Most citizen from Soviet Union are allowed, as well as people from Soviet-occupied Europe: Dani (German from Berlin), Eagle (Slovak), Gari (Hungarian), Mike (Romanian), Oleg (Soviet), Taras (Soviet), Zinaida (Soviet). In addition, Holly and Zail could join, too, according to their "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" philosophy against the British; Yves could also be sympathetic to communism since he is mentioned to have fought in French Resistance (many French resistants were communist), with no further explaination about his political allegiance. While he also fought for the French Resistance, Bob wouldn't fit the group: he's explicitely refered as joining the Free France (basically Charles de Gaulle's army), a non-communist faction. On the other hand, a few USSR/Eastern Europe party members are definitively forbidden for this party: Jerzey and Matt (cf Team Great Britain) are traitors who served the capitalist enemy, and Tadas is technically a Soviet citizen (born in Lithuania, which has been annexed by USSR in 1940) but defected to fight for Germany.
  • Clothing: Any Russian officer uniform for the player character (or even better: the NKVD officer uniform), any Russian uniform for the party members.
  • Loadout: Any gun used by the Soviets. The player character should carry a pistol (either a TT33, a Nagant revolver or a Mauser C96 variant), a SMG (PPSh, PPS or PPD), and RGD grenades. The rest of the team can use items such as TT33, Mauser C96, Nagant revolver, PPSh, PPD, and PPS SMGs, Mosin Nagant, AVS-36, SVT-40, SKS, RPD, DP machine gun, RGD grenades, etc. The AK-47 is unplausible (it wasn't used until 1947, the year the game is set).
Team We're Not the Nazis
Ich hatt' einen Kameraden

And last, here they are, the members of the defeated side. Now the Cold War is on its way while Europe is victim of Thor Hammer's threat again, a German war veteran joins the Sentinels then gathers a group of fellow former Axis fighters, while demonstrating their goodwill toward the West out of fear of USSR. As their countries are in ruins, working for the Sentinels is the best opportunity they found to prepare a better future for their world.
  • Player Character: American woman, Medic German man, Soldier.
  • Team: Up to five hired party members. It's basically most of the Axis roster from S2. Obviously, the whole German squad is available (Axel, Dani, Fritz, Gunnar, Klaus, Reggie). If you want to be a bit more original, you can fill one or two slots with an Axis operative from another country: Ahmad (Iranian), Carm (Italian), Eagle (Slovak), Gari (Hungarian), Javier (Argentinian), Kenko (Japanese), Mike (Romanian), Olli (Finnish), Rocco (Italian), Tadas (USSR defector), Toki (Japanese). The obvious exceptions are Holly and Zail: since this team intends to have good relation with the West, which means "be nice with the English"... The other exception to the "former Axis here" rule is Paco: contrary to the other characters, he doesn't come from a defeated country (he fought for the winning side during the Spanish Civil War, and then Spain was theorically neutral during WW2), so he most likely didn't lose his family during WW2; as for his home, his file explicitely mentions his family estate survived the Spanish Civil War undamaged.
  • Clothing: Any German officer uniform for the player character, any German uniform for the party members (including the vanilla ones). No SS uniforms, they're trying to amend themselves, show that Germans are respectable people and that they aren't nazis. An alternative solution would be to dress the whole team in civilian/partisan clothes: one year after the end of the war, local people could react badly to the sight of a squad of people dressed in Wehrmacht uniforms...
  • Loadout: Any gun used by the Germans. The player character should carry a pistol (either a P08 Luger, a P38 Walther, a Browning Hi-Power, or a Mauser C96) and a MP-something, as well as M-24 grenades (the "Potato Masher" grenades). The rest of the team can use items such as SSA dagger, Luftwaffe Machete knife, Kappmesser knife, P08 Luger, P38 Walther, Sauer 38x, Mauser C96, Browning Hi-Power, the various MP SMGs, the various Mauser rifles, GW-41, FG-42, StG-44, Volksgewehr 45, MG34, MG42, ZB 26-30, Panzerfaust, Panzerschreck, M-24 grenades, etc.
On His Majesty Secret Service
The name is Bond, James Bond.

The mythic Agent 007 during one of his early (and most secret) missions. Captured by the terrorist group Thor Hammer's Organisation under mysterious circumstances, he manages to escape, then meet the Sentinels. With the intent to bring MI6 attention on both THO and the Sentinels while countering the former, Bond joins the later in their fight against THO, then uses his skill and his charms to travel through the whole Europe while flirting with the nearby female Sentinels and bringing down THO.
  • Player Character: British man, Scout, named James Bond. Model his facial feature from one of the James Bond's actors.
  • Team: Either one, two or no hired member at all. Said party members should be female only, no matter their country, to reflect his irresistible charms. To create a balanced three-persons team (Scout - Sniper - Engineer), as well as offering some interesting tensions inside the team (it infortunately doesn't work this way, S3 doesn't allow to have your characters making out, but that what'd happen if S3 was a Bond movie), the best agents would be the Soviet Zinaida and miss "I Bloody Hates the English" Holly (only Bond's charms would make her accept to work with a British).
  • Clothing: The Agent Outfit or civilian formal clothes for Bond, anything you like for the female party members.
  • Loadout: Fairbairn-Sykes knife, Welrod, silenced Sten or Sterling Patchett, 36M MkI grenades and any explosive you want for Bond (despite the gun being from the era, the game doesn't include any Walther PP variant, unfortunately), anything you like as long as it includes the silenced Mauser or De Lisle carbine for the other team members.
Wolfenstein: Dawn of the Panzerkleins
Right! Nazis dead. Nazi robots dead. Broke all your ♥♥♥♥. Helicopters secured.

The Office of Secret Actions sent its best element to investigate some dark plot in Europe: Captain William Joseph Blazkowicz[wolfenstein.wikia.com]. Escaping from a mysterious group's custody, B.J. enters in contact with the secret Sentinels and joins them, bringing his destructive talents to help them in their fight against THO.
  • Player Character: American man, Soldier/Grenadier, named William "B.J." Blazkowicz. Model his facial features from the character from the Wolfenstein series.
  • Team: Either one, two, three or no hired member at all. Said party members should be picked from either the Team USA or Team Great Britain rosters. No German party member.
  • Clothing: American uniform for B.J. Follow the rule of the USA or Great Britain rosters for the other team members.
  • Loadout: B.J. should carry a SSA dagger, a M1911A1, a Thompson SMG, a MG42, and a copious amount of grenades, then drive a Panzerkleins once they become available. For the other team members, cf. Team USA or Team Great Britain.
Mobster Squad
I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse.
The American crime syndicate is worrying about European rumours concerning terrorism, new weapons, sinister plots, and Doomsday machines. They send their best element - you - to investigate (well, the end of the world would mean that the mob would lose its power, right?). The plotters spot the envoy of the mob and capture him/her. He/She manages to escape, having now legitimate reasons to suspect something fishy being planned. Also, the mob didn't appreciate one of its members being attacked. Then, the protagonist gathers a squad of ruthless fellow criminals to end the menace and teach a lesson to the enemy.
  • Player Character: American (gender doesn't matter), any class, with an Italian or Irish sounding name.
  • Team: Up to five hired members. Suggested party members would be Jerzey (he comes from a family of famous Polish criminals, though he's supposed to have severed his ties with them), Rowdie (him being a violent person needing to constantly vent out his aggressivity could have led him to become a henchman for a British mob; as a pub owner, he would probably be known by its local leader), Rocco (because Italian, because clichés), Carm (idem), Gunnar (a petty delinquent when he was a teen, he could have relapsed after the war), Holly (she is very good with explosives, and as long as what she does harm British interests... she probably wouldn't team up with Rowdie, though), Javier (he's from Argentina, but half of his family is Italian and he was living with them in Italy at the beginning of the war), Klaus (a shady and violent guy, as well as a good marksman), Sook (he probably dealt with shady people when looking for supplies on behalf of Korean resistance, then ending in debt with them), and Yves (a Parisian surgeon would probably have contacts with local gangs, if only by offering back-alley servives to help injured mobsters; Yves has also the specificity of being a promising aesthethic surgeon, and his skill at remodeling faces may seem interesting to fugitives). Avoid Mike (he was a policeman before the war).
  • Clothing: Any civilian attire, especially formal ones (the suits with fedoras).
  • Loadout: At least one Thompson with drum-magazine, one Smith & Wesson Model 10 and one M1903 Springfield. The other mobsters carry any type of cheap lower tier gun than are wielded by most of the enemies (Mauser C96, Nagant revolver, TT33, MP40, Lee-Enfield, etc.). Feel free to distribute small knives and clubs.
Adult Badass Ninja Sentinels
Cowabunga!

A group of four ninjas fight against the evil Thor Hammer's Organisation.
  • Player character: American or British man (it would be still more credible than a Russian or German ninja), Scout.
  • Team: Shade, Sook, Toki.
  • Clothing: Sentinel Soldier Uniform/Renegade Uniform for eveyone.
  • Loadout: One katana, various knives and blunt weapons, shurikens or throwing knives, a single rifle (De Lisle carbine or silenced Mauser), explosives.
The Professional
- Léon, what exactly do you do for a living?
- Cleaner.
- You mean you're a hit man?
- Yeah.
- Cool.

He is a professional. A cleaner. He has been hired by the Sentinels to wipe out Thor Hammer's Organisation, and that's what he'll do. But he works alone.
  • Player character: American man, Scout. Name him Leone "Léon" Montana[www.imdb.com], add a dark stubble and model his facial features from Jean Reno[www.imdb.com]. Yeah, I know the movie is supposed to be set several decades later, but I like this idea.
  • Team: He works alone.
  • Clothing: The Agent Outfit.
  • Loadout: KABAR, Smith & Wesson Model 10, De Lisle carbine.
Ironman Challenge
Warning: We are not responsible for: Loss of sanity - Loss of hair - Loss of sleep.

Was The Professional challenge too easy? Try this one.
  • Player character: Any nationality, any gender, any class.
  • Team: He/She works alone.
  • Clothing: Civilian or partisan clothes.
  • Loadout: A club and a .38 S&W revolver.
Summary of party member's bios and allegiances
This series of short bios aims to provide the same information which were previously written, but sorted as individual summaries for each party member. This list is sorted from the alphabetic order of their usual S2/S3 nickname, which is either their given name or a nickname surrounded with inverted commas (NB: according to Korean naming conventions, Kwon Sook's given name is "Sook", not "Kwon").
To limit cluttering this section, the most obvious suggestions (affinities between people from the same country, Western Allies / former Wehrmacht / Communist teams being mutually excluding unless a party member belongs to a country fitting several criteria) have been omitted.

A few unsorted RP tips
  • For better immersion and challenge, make sure to only carry the exact type of magazine used by your guns.
  • If you intend to do the "Team We Are not the Nazis" campaign but want some visual originality, there a some Italian uniforms available, as well as a couple of guns (Beretta SMG and Carcano rifles). Perfect for Rocco, but unfortunately for Carm those uniforms doesn't have a female counterpart.
  • In a similar note, to give Bob a more "Free French" note, dress him with a British uniform and give him either British or French guns (MAS 1936, Châtellerault machine gun).
  • There's a couple Japanese uniforms for Toki and Kenko, but the game unfortunately doesn't feature any Japanese guns.
  • To make Olli look more Finnish, arm him with a Pukko knife and a Suomi SMG, two weapons from Finland.
  • Don't use the Allies Sniper and Engineer vanilla uniforms. They're absolutely awful.
  • Don't use the female version of Sentinels outfit, unless you want your S3 campaign either looking like some obscure porn game or the leatherclad SS witches from Return to Castle Wolfenstein[wolfenstein.wikia.com].

Have you ever watched the Polar Dash Series of the first Silent storm game? He roleplayed his Axis characters so well, watch that and you'll understand that.
