Okay, so I've noticed that weapons overheat pretty quick, and that can delay harvesting minerals and such ...
One trick I've found is;

as soon as your weapon goes to red (about to overheat - top right) let go of your firing button for about 1 second, then start shooting again, this will drop the heat of the weapon down to 0.. and repeat.

Ignore the cooldown after letting go of your firing button (usually LMB) .. after 1 second if you fire again itll drop to 0 and start there.
