Introduction
Sometimes as a result of completing dungeons or missions for T you will be rewarded with a new incantation instead of a clue to the Ritual of Banishment. There are eight different incantations which can be used during dungeons for various effects. When you discover one it will be saved in your spellbook for future use. The exact rune combination needed to invoke an incantation is randomly generated each game so you can't just memorise them.

Typically, you would only be able to use incantations when you discover them in a specific playthrough but there is a hidden strategy to using ones you have not yet discovered. I'll explain how to do this in this guide.

Note: When invoking an incantation you will lose some sanity so don't use them carelessly. You can reduce sanity loss by equipping the Pentagram Necklace or the Rosary.
List of Spells
The eight available spells are as follows:

Strange Calm - Removes the Anxiety status effect. Very handy as the Wizard as whom you cannot melee enemies.

Healing Touch - Restores some health but does not remove status effects like bleeding or broken limbs.

Restoration - Restores a lot of health and alleviates physical status effects like bleeding or broken limbs.

Dark Vision - Increases the glow around you so you can see enemies in the dark. Note that if you use this incantation then enemies will become active as soon you enter the room, rather than waiting for them to approach within a certain distance. Not very useful in my opinion.

Open Lock - Opens a locked door. Handy for getting into the altar room in Stonehenge if you don't want to risk searching for the keys in every other room.

Clairvoyance - Reveals the dungeon map. Especially useful for getting through Stonehenge as rooms with items are shown as yellow so you can find loot or keys easily. Note that in Stonehenge the room with the ladder down to the altar will be shown as red- the same as rooms with stronger monsters. Be careful which rooms you enter.

Circle of Death - An area-of-effect attack around you. Will instantly kill most enemies which makes it very handy for killing the fiddly bosses like the Dangler. Make sure you're really close to enemies when using it because its range is limited.

Mass Death - An area-of-effect attack which damages all enemies in the room but is weaker at longer range. You're usually better off just using Circle of Death as this incantation costs an extra rune.
How To Deduce Incantations
Although the exact rune combination for each incantation is randomised each game, there is a pattern to the runes. Incanting runes at random is a pointless risk as you will still lose sanity even if you don't form a legitimate incantation. Nevertheless, It is possible to use the incantations you have already discovered to deduce all eight.

Each rune is assigned to one of five positions; A, B, C, D, or E. Incantations always follow the same pattern:

  • Strange Calm - D E
  • Healing Touch - E C
  • Restoration - D E C
  • Dark Vision - B C
  • Open Lock - A B
  • Clairvoyance - A B E
  • Circle of Death - A D
  • Mass Death - B A D

If you're really dedicated, when you find incantations ingame write them down and figure out which runes correspond to which position. You can then determine the others by matching their patterns. Some two-rune incantations use the same runes as three-rune incantations which means you effectively learn extra incantations for free.

If you discover Restoration you can also deduce Healing Touch and Strange Calm.

If you discover Clairvoyance you can deduce Open Lock.

If you discover Mass Death you can deduce Circle of Death.
Conclusion
That's about it, really! If you can be bothered to write down the rune patterns as you find incantations then you'll get a neat advantage with extra spells.

Plus, if you incant a spell you've deduced but didn't discover directly you get this achievement:

I hope this helps the other people still playing this game. I'm sure you're both delighted.

I've also realized that if you have Clairvoyance and Restoration, which are usually spells nobody uses or needs to use, you can guess EVERY spell in the game. Clairvoyance gives you A and B, and Restoration gives you C, D, and E.

Looks cool. But isn't this some sort of exploiting at the end? Spells are supposing rare and powerful which forces players to forming strategy around whatever spells they got on hand.
