The Wasp

The Wasp is a quick and agile light aircraft that is a blast to fly. Thanks to Digi's control module and aerodynamic wings, The Wasp features true flight controls, using only forward thrust for propulsion. It offers the most realistic atmospheric flight experience available in Space Engineers.

The secret is in Digi's Control Module. If the plane looks like it has a lot of timers and gyros for a vehicle so small, you're right - it does. But each timerblock controls a gyroscope that performs a specific function. The gyroscopes act as wing flaps and stabilizers, one to roll the plane left, one to the right right, one to pitch the nose up, and one down. A fifth gyroscope and timer block acts as a stabilizer when the plane isn't turning.

What does this mean? This means real barrel rolls, banked turns, inverted dives, and split S maneuvers. It means real takeoffs and landings, and truly stable flight. It means real atmospheric flight physics in Space Engineers. It also means you could connect a joystick and throttle peripheral device to control the plane.

Controls

W - Propeller Throttle Up
D - Propeller Throttle Down/Airbrake

num4 - Roll Left
num6 - Roll Right

num 5 - Pitch Up
num 8 - Pitch Down

(on toolbar:)
1 - Turn Propller on/off
2 & 3 - Manual throttle increase and decrease
8 - Parking Brake on/off
9 - Main Power on/off

To the change these keybindings, access the Digi's Control Mod options in the timer blocks for the respective function. Be sure to remove the old keybindings if you add new ones. If you change the numpad controls, you must also change the stabilizer timer keybindings to match the new inputs.

A warning about changing keybindings - if you select an input that does a default function in the game, it will do both that function and the one you assigned in the timer block. (Example: if you set the Y key to the Pitch Up timer block, pressing Y will tell the gyroscope to pitch up, but will also turn off the aircraft's main power - the normal function of the Y key). Read more about Digi's Control Module mod here.

The Wasp is survival ready

The Wasp has small reactors and cargo containers that must be filled manually. The forward propeller is paired with a single small atmospheric thruster that functions as an airbreake. The Wasp isn't a cargo carrier, but a light and agile scout aircraft. It is equipped with an ore detector and FAA regulation compliant navigation lights. If you paste the airplane in from the blueprint, the cargo containers contain 3 spare hydrogen bottles and the supplies for a spare propeller and four spare wing segments, and the reactors contain enough uranium for hours of power. The aircraft comes equipped with a speedometer, acceperometer, power information, and cargo manifest thanks to MMaster's Configurable Automatic LCDs script.

The Wasp Racer

A racing variant of the Wasp can be seen in Canyon Run, the first of my upcoming Omega Race League series of racecourses. Download the map and fly the Wasp through 24 checkpoints along a mountaineous canyon course.
