General
That’ll Come In Handy...
Find all five pieces of the Talisman.

Throughout the game are scattered five talisman pieces; each piece can be found in a secret area and is guarded by more powerful creature. General locations are (credit to u/KerrikTheCleric):

The Bloodtower - At one point you will need to activate an elevator and ride up into a large group of flying heads. As you ride up, look to the left to find a discolored section of wall that is passable. Defeat the beholder guardian to unlock the first piece.

The Wolf Cave - After you pass the cave and speak with the wolf spirit, jump across the pit with the portal to pass a fake wall. Defeat the wolf guards to unlock the second piece.

The Highland Cave -

Old Town.

The Castlebridge - When you drop down to the area with two bloodwolves, push the large block to your left to enter the secret. Defeat the two beholder guardians to unlock the final piece.

Schadenfreude
Watch 30 enemies get killed by traps.

This is most accomplished via crush traps. I found a good spot midway through the Wolf level where a checkpoint is located just right of a crush trap with a skelly spawner to the left of it. Skeletons will spawn and be crushed, achievement popped within 2 minutes of idling.

Right Back Atcha
Destroy 30 enemies with reflected projectiles.

This one will come naturally over time. Stunning skeletons with reflected magic and killing them with the critical attack does not appear to count. I got this by killing the beholders with their own orbs.

Kill ‘Em All
Slay 8 of your enemies in a trice.

There are many opportunities to get this one. I found an easy spot was in the sewers where you are attacked by three waves of skellymen. Wait for the first wave to close on you and then activate a spirit bomb to wipe the screen and earn the achievement.

Guard! Turn! Parry! Dodge! Spin! Ha!
Successfully execute 100 Critical Strikes.

Critical strikes can be initiated in several ways; normal enemies can be parried, stunned by reflected magic or destroyed by a charged attack. Bosses can often be stunned and critical attacked by various means. This should come naturally as you progress.

A Good Day To Die
You Have Been Killed 100 times. Rejoice!

Pretty self explanatory. You will get this easily, as the game is quite punishing!

Get Used To It
Die for the very first time.

You should get this in the first level unless you are very careful. If you do die in the first level, you will need to replay to earn "Start as you mean to go on".
Full Playthrough Goals
Too Metal For Magic
Defeat the game without using any Mana.

Self explanatory, but definitely easier said than done. Complete the entire game without pressing the magic button once; your safest bet is to unbind the magic button to prevent an accidents.
Confirmed: According to u/Kordesh, reloading the checkpoint will not reset the achievement state if magic is accidentally used.

Heart Of Steel
Defeat the game without losing a single life.

Self explanatory, but definitely easier said than done. Complete the entire game without dying once. You cannot reset the state for this achievement without starting a new game, tread carefully!

Hail the Great Horned Metal God!
Headbang after every single boss has been defeated.

The most metal of achievements! After each boss (enemy with a health bar and name), you will see a prompt to press attack to headbang. Do so for all of the bosses (excluding Vroll) to earn this achievement, if you miss the prompt reload the checkpoint to get another chance.
Bloodgrounds
Someone’s Paying Attention!
Successfully avoid the first spike trap in the Bloodgrounds.

Spike traps are indicated by a murder of crows gathered around carrion on the spikes, jump over the first trap in the bloodgrounds to earn the achievement.

Man ‘O War
Kill every Beholder in the Hive without using mana.

Early on you will be trapped in a room with 10 beholders (shortly after receving the tutorial on the mana bomb), simply use your steel to kill them.

Start As You Mean To Go On
Finish the Bloodgrounds without dying at all.

This comprises the level from when you are resurrected to when you defeat the thorn boss, complete this area without dying to unlock the achievement. You can select Restart Stage to try again.

Thorn in My Herbicide
Defeat the Thorn Beast without losing any health.

Each of these boss achievements are straight forward but easier said than done; restart from the checkpoint if you are struck. For the thorn boss, run back and forth to avoid the columns of thorns, parry and riposte his melee strikes until he enters phase two; jump over his rolling form and hang back until the spores settle, then close for a critical strike, repeat until dead.

Sure Footed As A Goat
Reached the top of the Blood Tower without falling in any gore pits.

This only seems to count for your last attempt of each section, so restart from checkpoint if your happen to fall into any of the red, bubbling pits.

Down Boy!
Defeat the Fire Hounds without losing any health.

At the top of the Blood Tower you are confronted by Vroll's hounds. The first hound does not count for the achievement but is good practice for the room that follows. If you conserve your mana until entering the boss arena, you can fire off 4 blasts at one of the hounds and kill it on the first riposte, leaving you with only one to deal with. The hounds have two basic attacks: shoot fireball and flame charge. The fireball should be hit back at them (a stagger occurs after every two are reflected), while the charge must be jumped over. If you swing two early on the fireball, you will be hit by the AOE firestorm and will need to restart from the checkpoint (before the first hound).
Wolf Woods
Killed by Death
Squash a Wolf Guard in a crusher trap.

There are a number of places to do this but the most convienent placment is after the wolf run; simply lure a wolf guard (the ones who summon wolf spirits) into a crush trap. Be careful to avoid the wolf spirits if you get too far away from the guard.

Four Legged Friend
Complete the Wolf Run without losing any health.

After meeting the great wolf spirit, you will be transformed into a werewolf and chased through a course, complete this without taking damage to unlock the achievement. Your wolf form will cry out and flash red if hit, you will need to restart from the last checkpoint if this happens.
Note: This achievement must be completed in one run through, but there is a checkpoint at the halfway point, if you are struck in the second section, you will need to restart the whole level to try again.

Red In Tooth And Claw
Defeat Lupus Rex without losing any health.

Each of these boss achievements are straight forward but easier said than done; restart from the checkpoint if you are struck. For the wolf boss, parry his melee attacks (tricky timing, appears to be a split second after he raises his claw to strike) and riposte, and reflect his projectiles back at him. At half health he will enter his second phase, which introduces a jumping lunge before he shoots his projectiles, as well as shooting three orbs instead of one.
The Highlands
Backdoor Man
Escape the Highlands Caves through the secret passage.

Just after the arena where you fight three waves of skeletons, there will be a switch on the ceiling in front of the crusher trap. Hit this switch, then proceed up the elevator and go right into the portal. Escape the gauntlet with the Skeletal Butcher trying to crush you to unlock the achievement.

Flame Retardant
Complete Highlands level without killing an enemy with the flame blade.

Near the beginning of the level, you will be granted the flame sword by the crone, immediately swap with the steel sword or ice axe and complete the level using one of these weapons instead.
Note: This did no pop for me on my first run through the level, I had to replay to earn this achievement.

Enjoy The Silence
Defeat the Banshee Queen without losing any health.

Each of these boss achievements are straight forward but easier said than done; restart from the checkpoint if you are struck. For the Banshee boss, stay close to the boss (do not jump, the boss' hitbow does reach your head height) and watch for her two attacks: when her belly swells, she will spawn a number of red orbs that become the stabbing ghost children, destroy these and get some free hits at the same time as allowing them to spawn will complicate your fight greatly; her second attack is preceded by her beginning to wail, when this happens get underneath her and start swinging and moving in the same direction as her. Being caught by the shriek attack is an instant kill.
The Sewers
Death Becomes Her
Dispatch the Mother Beholder within 30 seconds.

Oh God, Mother! Blood! Blood!
Defeat the Mother Beholder without losing any health.

The Mother Beholder is a particularly difficult boss with only two attacks: she launches green orbs at your current position and spawns growths on her body that fall off and become mini-beholders. She is weak to the ice axe and magic bolts.

Phase 1: Swooping back and forth and firing green orbs at you. Hit the orbs back at her and jump over any that you cannot hit. Get behind her and swing away while constanly moving to avoid the orbs. At half health, she will move to Phase 2.

Phase 2: Swooping back and forth and spawning growths on her body that fall off and become mini-beholders. Chase her as in Phase 1 and try to avoid the beholders as much as possible (smashing their red eggs whenever convenient). At 1/4 health, she will move to Phase 3.

Phase 3: Swooping back and forth and with a combination of Phase 1 and 2 attacks. It is advisable to save your mana for this phase and use a mana bomb to severely damage the Mother and destroy a large number of the mini-beholders. Then you only have to finish her off.

Both achievements are doable, but mountains of patience are required!
Old Town
A Snowball’s Chance in Hell
Hit 6 Ice Meteors back at the Ice Beast.

When the Ice beast shoots the meteors at you, swat them back with an attack (just like you've done for every ranged enemy in the game...)

Ice To See You
Defeat the Ice Beast without losing any health.

Each of these boss achievements are straight forward but easier said than done; restart from the checkpoint if you are struck. For the Ice Beast boss, parry its melee attack and reflect its ice meteors back at it. Positioning yourself by the shrine in the background will allow you to reach the bosses second phase without moving.

Once the boss reaches the second phase it will turn into a dervish and begin to shoot ice shards in the eight directions. Jump over the ground level shards and swipe at the west and northwest shards, then distance yourself from the dervish to execute a charged strike, repeat once more and then use your spirit bomb to finish him off.

Smack My Imp Up
Defeat Malikesh without losing any health.

Each of these boss achievements are straight forward but easier said than done; restart from the checkpoint if you are struck. For the Malikesh boss, use the ice axe as this appears to be his weakness. The boss can only be damaged by striking the imp, but striking the golem will cause it to recoil which reduces the heat on you during the fight. The imp will shoot fireballs periodically and the golem will slam the ground and send out a shockwave. Jump over each shockwave and get in a few hits on the imp. His fireballs can be reflected back at him for miniscule damage. At 2/3 health the imp will shoot two fireballs, then three at 1/3 health.

This boss can be quite a test of endurance, but watch for tricky jump swing timing and eventually you will prevail!
Castle
The Sky Is Falling
Defeat Hogre without losing any health.

Each of these boss achievements are straight forward but easier said than done; restart from the checkpoint if you are struck. For the Hogre boss, use the fire sword. Remember Gwyn? Parry riposte is your go to tool for this fight. After four attacks, he will leap to the other side of the arena (be careful as his foot clipping you will cause damage) and then summon two bolts of lightning from above. Start on the opposite side from him and walk briskly towards him to avoid the attack, then parry his incoming attack to repeat the pattern. At 1/3 health remaining he will run off and you will earn achievement? 😀

Vroll With It
Kill Vroll without taking any damage.

Swift of Foot, Keen of Blade
Destroy Vroll and liberate Chalh within 3 minutes.

Each of these boss achievements are straight forward but easier said than done; restart the stage if you are struck. For Vroll you must complete his three phases without taking a hit; completing the first and second phase will trigger checkpoints that will screw you up, always do restart stage if you are going for this achievement.

Phase 1 - Vroll will select either fire or ice (seems random based on some testing with switching up the starting weapon), switch to the weapon of the opposite element and prepare to fight!
Starting with Ice Vroll - shoot a fireball, parry and riposte, two strikes, then run right and shoot another fireball left. Reflect his ice ball, then shoot another fireball, parry and riposte, then two more strikes and switch to the ice axe. He will switch to fire and shoot up meteors, position yourself to avoid the meteors, then shoot an ice ball, parry riposte, two strikes, then back up, shoot again, jump over the ground fire, strike his head and hold the attack button as you come down to execute a charged strike, then immediately parry and riposte his attack, strike twice to down him.
Starting with Fire Vroll - shoot and ice ball, parry and riposte, shoot another ice ball and run to the left, shoot another ice ball left, then jump over the ground fire, strike his head and hold the attack button as you come down to execute a charged strike, then immediately parry and riposte his attack, strike twice and switch to the fire sword. Position yourself to avoid the ice pillar attack and shoot a fire ball, parry and riposte, two strikes. Run to the right and shoot another fireball, then reflect his ice ball, shoot another fireball, parry and riposte, two strikes to finish him (switch to the ice axe as he is dying to save time in phase 2)

Phase 2 - Vroll will transform into a large dragon, this form seems to take the most damage from the ice axe and steel sword. His basic attack pattern remains the same throughout this phase:
Swoop across the field and drop fire below > Land with crushing force > Shoot two fireballs > Shoot electric beams > Shoot two fireballs > Swoop again
The basic strategy is to run to the opposite side as he swoops, then jump in the direction of the fire as it fades to avoid his landing. Shoot a ice ball in his face and then position yourself with enough room to deflect the fireballs safely (ie give yourself enough time to react). Bounce two fireballs into his face and then run up to execute two charged attacks, retreat, bounce two more fireballs and do two more charged attacks, then run from another swoop. Repeat until he dies. The electricity can be dodged by moving away from him and then jumping over the third beam.

Phase 3 - Vroll becomes an astral spirit, with only two basic attacks. Switch to steel sword for this portion. He will move from the middle to the right and shoot two waves of semi-homing orbs, then move to the left and do the same, then return to the center and unleash a large orb that moves along the bottom of the screen from left to right. As he moves to the sides, run up and get free hits in on his lower half. Dodge the homing orbs by standing close to him and running/jumping/dodging backwards as each volley hits the ground. When he moves to the center stand either just to his left or all the way at the right side; jump over the large orb as it passes, taking care not to collide with his hitbox (upper torso) as you do. His homing orbs will increase in number as his health depletes, but the strategy remains the same. Repeat until he is vanquished!

Congratulations! Vroll has been slain!

For the "Full Playthrough" ones, do you need to achieve them in one sitting? Or can I quit and continue later?
Luz Ancestral 17 Dec, 2022 @ 7:30pm
@Acethor Yes, you can do that. Even more: If you die, if you press Alt+F4 just before the screen of "You have been SLAIN" the death won't count because the game automatically saves in this screen the first time you dead. I did that and restarted checkpoint a few times and could earn it.

Can you select any level you want after finishing the game?

For Malikesh I found if you time the end of his entrance dialogue so he's at the top peak of his flight pattern, it lines up so that you can do a charge attack as soon as you gain control and get a free chunk of his health to start.
Also, if you time it well you can dodge backward into the statue's slam shockwaves and they just disappear without hurting you. Then you don't even have to worry about timing your jump with the fireballs cause those can't even hit you on the ground.

For the "Heart of Steel" achievement, does anyone know if restarting the stage or restarting checkpoint without dying will mess it up? Technically you haven't died, so technically it should work, right? For example you have low hp, or falling into a pit and about to die, can you just quickly hit ESC and restart checkpoint or stage?

the flamme retardant achievemente is confusing, but as stated previously, don't return back fire attacks bc it'll count as a fire attack even if you use the normal sword. Don't do that! it took like 10 times to realize that!! I thought the achievement was bug'ed or smth, but no, it was good just badly explain, also I want to point out that the "Death Becomes Her" achievement is badly explain, you don't have to beat mother beholder under 30 secs, but under 50- 1 min instead. Other than that, i had no issue getting other chivos, perhaps, and this is warning, the one that coested me the most was getting "Pimp my imp up", gosh I struggle with this one, It took me countless attempts..geez...it really got on my nerves, but overall the game is great, oldschool, hard and frustrating as a good ol' Castlevania. :D

@KenBingsley thanks for the tip
IntegrityConstraintViolation 17 Aug, 2018 @ 3:26pm
the description for "Flame Retardant" is false! if you hit projectiles back to the enemies it will count as fire attack and you wont get the achiement! i needed three attempts to get it. @ssken043 you may want to write it in the guide to make it easier for everyone, because it is not really a hard achievement, is it? but just around one percent of all players have it.
Lord Of War 15 Apr, 2018 @ 10:10am
Here's a little specification from my experience on "Four Legged Friend" achievement.
It's only the run as a wolf that counts towards the achievement, excluding the battle with spirit wolves that comes after .
Saying this because I didn't get the achievement at the second checkpoint after the run and kept on trying to slay those wolves without losing health, haha...
The run is actually simple - when you meet more than 2 enemies, keep pressing "w" or whatever attack button is , then your wolf-body will pierce everyone without flashing red.

fire sword is much better with mother beholder
