Counter-Strike: 1.6 Dedicated Server (SteamCMD) [English/Englisch] [Windows]

In this Guide i will show you, how to setup a Counter-Strike 1.6 Server!

The following port must be open:

UDP/TCP 27015 Server Port

SteamCMD Download

First of all you need the SteamCMD. You can download it here:

SteamCMD Login

Now you need to execute this file.
After a few seconds you can login:

By now you should be logged in.

Server Files Download

Now you need to enter the following in the console:

force_install_dir ./cs_ds/

This will create a folder with the name "cs_ds" and it will put in the files in this folder.

Now you can start the download with:

app_update 90 validate

If the download was sucessful, you have to type

exit

in the console close the SteamCMD.

Run the Server

To run the Server, you need to start the "hlds.exe" in your "cs" folder.

Now choose the game "Counter-Strike."
By now you should be able, to choose the map you want, also you can change what you want!

You just need to setup an RCON Password to start the Server!

You can also run the Server through a BAT file with the following codes.
(Which also helps, if the first method doesn´t work for you.)
Internet:

start hlds -game cstrike -console +maxplayers 12 +map de_dust

LAN:

start hlds -game cstrike -console -insecure -nomaster +sv_lan 1 +maxplayers 12 +map de_dust

Configurate the server

To change the settings of the server, we will need the "server.cfg"
This file can be found in the "cstrike" folder.

Here we can change settings like the servername, map, password etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

I can not see my server / No one can connect to my server
Please make sure, that you have opened all the required ports in your router. If the everything is set correctly, but the problem still occurs, please contact your internet provider.

Is there another way instead of opening the ports?
Yes, you can also host your server through a VPN network like "Hamachi". Of course only the people in the VPN network will be able to join the server then.
If forwarding your ports doesn´t work, please contact your ISP, i won´t be able to help you.

The SteamCMD download failed! What should I do now?
Mostly you just need to retry the download, then the problem should be fixed.

How do I update my server?
Just open the SteamCMD and login again, then retry the Step "Downloading the files" it will be checked which files need to be updated.

@islamcr39 That´s your network INTERNAL IP, not your IP on the internet.

@islamcr39 The files couldn´t be loaded, cause they don´t exist yet. (Since you don´t have a whitelist on IP´s or banned people.)

Normaly it should none the less be able to connect to the steam servers, were they having issues at the time?

@nerfz Sure, you can do this, but if you want to run this as a headless server, this option is much better.

Looks like the best way now is to simply search your steam library for tools>half-life dedicated server> Install it and then run it and set your server settings from there. Then using your set rcon command just run what ever .cfg you want to use. eg. cal.cfg and a lo3.cfg if playing a proper MR15 match.
