FAQ for the skilled FPS player who is new to savage
By pacifist0rz
There is a big influx of new players, which is awesome. And what is even more awesome is that many of these new players are pretty skilled, and they are asking questions to try to understand how to play the game better. As commander, I have been getting asked a ton of questions, which unfortunately I often don’t have time to fully answer in the game since I am busy commanding and trying to win. So I just wanted to make this guide to try to answer some of the typical questions/requests that I get in the game.

Frequently asked questions and/or requests made to the commander by new players.
Get the 3rd bow (and/or lighting).
The reason that I am not researching these is because I don’t want the entire team camping. To win the game, I need you to push out from base.

Get chaplains/healers
Unfortunately as it stands right now, healer units are too weak and have too little of an impact to be useful. So I would rather have you play as a real unit. To make the masses happy, I will usually research these later in the game once I feel that our win is secure.

Build a garrison here (usually within the first few minutes of the game after we have already established our first forward mining garrison)
The early game priority is to get you savages (tier2 unit) along with a tier2 gun (flux or repeater). Spending 1000 stone on a garrison will delay our tech by a few minutes, and you won’t be able to defend the new garrison with just nomads and xbow against stalkers with tempest or sacrifice.

Build defenses here (usually early game near the sublair that we just built)
A few possibilities here.
  • I might not have gold for a spire, Spire + Sublair costs 2500 gold, but our team only starts with 1500 gold, so I need you guys to get a few kills before we have enough gold. This is also why I will often request players to attack NPCs right at the start of the game.
  • I might have units pushing out from the subliar. In this cause I can see that no enemies are incoming, and I would rather spend the 250 stone of getting tech just that much faster instead of building a spire right away.

Get us some ranged weapons (usually within the first 2 minutes of the game)
The general early game priority is to get level2 lair started ASAP. You will thank me in 2 minutes when we have stalkers and tempest, and the other team is still running around with nomads with scatter guns. If you really don’t like fighting without a ranged weapon, you can play defense and help mine or build at base for the first few minutes

Finish the tech
On maps like snowblind, eden, or bunker with balanced teams, humans expect to lose their forward mining garrison during tier2 from sacrifice, after they only get a portion of stone out of it. I will not have enough stone to get all the tech, so some luxury items such as chem may have to wait until we can push back out and secure a stone mine. I will always get legos, coil rifles, and kongs, which I can get off of just one stone mine and are the minimum tools needed for the humans to win the game.

Get the green gun first (surge)
To win as beasts with balanced teams, beasts need to have a very aggressive offense during Tier2. The main issue with surge is the limited ammo. When on offense, you will likely be able to only kill 1 player with it (maybe 2 or 3, if they run straight at you and don’t dodge), but after that you will be out of mana and your push will fail. Entropy also does not offer beasts any good items for attacking towers/buildings (no sacrifice or mist) and also no commander buffs to maintain offensive pushes (no heals)

I keep getting killed by enemy towers.
You have a few options:
  • If you strafe back and forth quickly, enemy tower shots will miss you. You can actually melee down a tower solo once you have mastered this technique.
  • Try to go around the tower and attack from a different angle where the tower won’t hit you
  • Have a teammate shoot the tower with a ranged weapon, the tower will then attack him allowing you to run under it.
  • Stay outside of tower range and kill enemies as they come out (as commander when I see my team pushed up to their base, I will usually place subalir behind you with workers and/or request team to bring up siege.

Why can’t we destroy any human buildings?
They are being protected by a shield tower. The easiest way to destroy it is to have one player run a summoner while the several players on the team protect him. Best way to protect the summoner is to push a little bit ahead and kill humans before they can get in range. However, don’t push all the way into the enemy towers where you will get quickly killed. The summoner will often need to find the right “angle” where he can fire a shot around other towers that are in front of the shield tower. For long distance summoner shots, it is hard to visually see that your shot landed on the right building. The way for the summoner to tell that he is hitting the right building is to look for the popup text after your shot lands. You want to see 1200 damage. Only 240 damage means that you hit a shielded building.

There is an enemy Legionare in our based named "sho.t" that I just can’t seem to kill.
Grab surge and range him down. If/when you run out of mana, go back into the lair to get more. This is the ”safest” way to kill him and/or force him to relocate. Even if this method may take several clips of mana to kill him, going in to melee him and dying accomplishes little.

How do I destroy those behemoths?
Grab a pulse cannon (tier3 electric weapon) and an ammo pack. Stay out of range of its tree truck. Usually just back peddling with sprint is sufficient, but If needed, turn around and sprint away to maintain a safe distance.

How do I destroy those Kongs?
Grab blaze (tier2 fire weapon) and stormshield (tier1 strata item). Activate stormshield before getting close to the kong to avoid getting one shot. Then leap behind the kong and unload your entire clip of blaze on it. It should be under 10% health and you can finish it off with a few melee swings. If there are multiple Kongs, you can take out one with blaze while using sacrifice on the other.

Player XXX is cheating, he just disappears when I’m about to kill him.
He is using a relocator (human electric item). These items are used for humans to save gold from dying as well as denying beasts gold from getting a kill.

@Transvestite: download the free game Savage XR (www.savagexr.com) and check the duel replay and the duel practice in the tutorial section. Savage XR also has duel servers with an excellent map designed to learn the combat. The combat mechanics and 98% of the gameplay are identical to what you get in Savage Resurrection.

Thanks for the guide, I played a few games with you this weekend and had a blast. One thing I would like to see more of in this game is communication for more competative and strategic play.

To be fair though, that's probably the most useful point of view to have here.
