General tips

I made this guide when the game was only five or six months old in summer 2016. Konami has abandoned it since. Cheaters are the only thing left in it. I can't recommend to anyone this game at this point.

Konami has become a company that no longer supports their games after release. They give you crap updates for a few months and then banish. This is exactly what happened with MGSV/MGO3 and is exactly what is happening with Survive too. I don't even expect they will keep the MGO3 server running for 2019.

I used to love this game. I had tons of fun and made some friends with whom I kept playing other games. I never cheated, never. Yet, I managed to reach the top 100 players, if that means something in a ranking crowded with idiots with hacks. This a beginner guide that comes from an advanced player that will never play again for the said reasons. The usefulness of it has deprecated severly, as the state of the game isn't nearly as it used to be.

With that said, I hope you find some utility to it.

#F.UCKONAMI > these guys don't give a F about cheaters, because NONE of them have been banned after more than two years. So I say f them too...

As of now, bull$hit like the one in this video, happens in every match. Enjoy the remnants of MGO!

Communication:

Metal Gear Online 3 is a team based game in which teamwork is essential to win. That's the primary reason the buddy system is in place, to make your entire team work as an collective mind. But that's only on the paper. To get to play like that, you need to comunicate with your partners. To do it, press Q or LB button so that you can send voice commands presets. And if the need comes, press B to send your own voice with your microphone.

Marking:

Like communication, intel gathering is very important and can give big advantage to your team. Knowing the enemy position can turn to tide of the battle. To mark an enemy, do it like in MGSV. Use your int-scope until the enemy has been marked.

You can also put markers on the map using your int-scope or the iDroid, just like you do in MGSV. There are 3 types of markers in MGO though. The 1st one is for marking the position of an enemy. The 2nd one to mark the objective you want people to attack. The 3rd, to mark the position of the objective you want people to defend. Use them wisely.

The radar:

Noise made by enemies is represented with red circles in the radar. Other noises other than explosions and your own, won't be shown in the radar. Your own noise is represented in the same way but in white color. The wider the circle, the longer the enemy can see your noise in the radar and viceversa. This is very important because you can give yourself away completely with the noise represented in the radar. That also makes easier for you to spot enemies by sound, so pay attention to the radar!

To reduce the distance in which enemies can see you in the radar, refrain from using too many weapons at the same time. Weight it's very important to reduce noise as we will see in the "classes introduction" section.

In the radar, you will also see the objectives, allies, and enemies that have been marked. It's important to know where your teammates are and more, to know the enemy position.

The buddy system:

When you make a buddy connection with a friend, he or she will be highlighted in the map with a white arrow, unlike the rest of your team mates. He or she will also have a buddy icon on his/her body that will give you important information about his/her state. Pay attention to these:

Having a buddy will also allow you both to use the wormhole device, which can be used to fulton enemies safely. We will speak more about this in the "game modes introduction" section.

To make a buddy, if you haven't one already when the match starts, hold the right stick or the V key and press the action button/key. It's the same button/key used in MGSV to zoom-in the camera.

Important general considerations related to network and gameplay:

MGO doesn't have host migration, which means if the host leaves mid-game, it will be restarted. Please, refrain from leaving the game if you are the host in the middle of it. Do it in the prep screen or after the game has ended.

MGO has serious net problems that I won't speak of, but if you notice that everyone has a red ping and the game is lagging a lot and you are the host, leave the game and join back so that other person gets to be the host.

If you are the host of a game, you won't be able to see your own ping. Use that information in addition to he above said.

Please, don't waste internet resources in other stuff while playing MGO. Stop your downloads and refrain from using internet TV while playing.

This is a small community that we need to take care of. If you spot cheaters, report them here with a video proof you can upload to youtube: https://www.konami.com/mgs/tpp/report/index.php?region=europe&lang=en
Classes introduction
In Metal Gear Online 3, there are 3 classes:
  • Scout
  • Enforcer
  • Infiltrator
First of all, let's check each class parameters:

As you can see, the class with the biggest health is enforcer while the one with the least is infiltrator, being scouts in the middle of the two. This is also noticiable for every other parameter, with speed and noise in the middle as well. So we can say scout is the most balanced class.

Here you can see as well how weight affects all classes, being the scout the most balanced of all. Weight affects how far the noise you produce is seen by the enemy in the radar and also the movement speed of your character.

Scout

The game says this class is for beginners, but I'm not sure about that. Enforcers have an easier job to get kills in low levels and can be easily played good enough by unexperienced players. Scouts nevertheless, focus more in intel gathering and support, which in fact, require more tactic gameplay than enforcers. They also specialize in sniper rifles, which require more aiming skills than the weapons enforcers use.

Their primary role
As their name suggest, scouting should be their primary focus. Give support and provide intel of enemy positions and movements. Marking is their specialty, and no other class can mark enemies this fast. A good scout is the one that provides useful intel, has good aim and helps their teammates to win with their support from a distance.

Their recommended game mode
Bounty Hunter is the game mode where scouts will put their skills into better use, but while you progress and unlock more gear and equipment, they can adapt pretty easily to the other game modes. They have the most varied arsenal of all classes, and they can be effective on long-mid-short range combat. They can be effective as well when attacking in Cloak and Dagger since they can mark the defending team fast and give important intel to your team.

Enforcer

The enforcer is described by the game for intermeate players, but as I said before, I think playing as enforcer is easier than playing as scout. They have more health, more stun resistance and they basically focus on killing while using heavy weapons and explosives as main artillery. Not much skill is required to play as enforcer as a beginner.

Their primary role
As their name suggest, their focus is to provide heavy attack force. They serve as great distraction for infiltrators to do their job and as well to protect other players from being fultoned or interrogated, etc. They can provide good fire support and cover fire as other players advance behind their shields. But they aren't meant for intel gathering, as their marking speed is really slow and they can become a juicy objective for infiltrators if all they do is kill enemies in Bounty Hunter.

Their recommended game mode
This class is heavily recommended for Comm Control, specially when they level up and get more explosives related items and perks. They can do real damage while defending comm links. They can be used as well as means to destroy the missile in Sabotage and also blowing up the fulton balloons thanks to the heavy weapons they use. In a nutshell, this is the tank class of MGO3.

Infiltrator

This is the hardest class to master, since a single mistake can get you killed due to being the weakest class of all. They also focus on CQC rather than heavy weapons or long distance combat, so it's not expected from this class that you go around like a chiken killing everything that moves. This class is the only one that can execute a CQC with instant stun to an enemy thanks to the CQC stealth 2 perk (upon reaching a certain level).

Their primary role
This class, as the name suggest, is meant to flank enemies, go behind them, interrogate, stun, fulton or make silent kills. To stay outside of enemy sight and reach your goals undetected. This class requires far more skills than the rest and it can be played in a more tactical way than any of the others. If you really want to improve your skills, this is the class for you since it will force you to play better. All the "Tactical Espionage Action" is inside this class.

Their recommended game mode
Bounty Hunter as bounty collectors it's ideally their best role. They can turn the tide on a match with a single fulton executed with precission. Although, this class can be played in all games if you know how, but certainly it's not recommened for beginners in game modes like Sabotage, since their skills are less important here. They can make a difference as well in Cloak and Dagger with their noise offset and speed. Also, with the instant stun CQC and interrogation skills, they can take out enemies silently and provide valious intel to your team.
Game modes introduction
Bounty Hunter

Bounty Hunter is the equivalent of team deathmatch in many multiplayer games. The big difference between those and Bounty Hunter is basically that you can steal all the kills the enemy team has made by fultoning your enemies. What does that mean?

Precisely just that. You can fulton your opponents instead of killing them. To do so, you 1st need to stun them or put them to sleep, just like you can do in MGSV main game when you fulton soldiers to Mother Base. Once you fulton an enemy, the number of kills (bounty) that said enemy had, will be added to your team's score and one ticket removed from your enemy's score. So, the big difference between a kill and a fulton is that with one kill you will only get one ticket out from the enemy team, but with a fulton you will also get as many tickets as the fultoned enemy had added to your team's score.

Important considerations in Bounty Hunter:

Since the wormhole was introduced as fulton device in MGO, you can use it to fulton your enemies when you are inside a building. But the wormhole has limitations, and it can only be used when the buddy gauge is filled. To fill up your buddy gauge stay close to your buddy and never respawn on him/her since that will deplete the buddy gauge again. Once it's full, you can use the wormhole to fulton one enemy with it. After using it, the buddy gauge will deplete again and you'll need to fill it up once more.

This is very important for those players that their primary objective is to fulton enemies, like infiltrators, but it's not limited to them. Non-lethal players can take advantage as well of this item. So make sure you respawn in your buddy only when it's intelligent to do so.

The wormhole is also useful to ensure the high bounty of an enemy ends in your team's score and nobody can save him/her from being fultoned.

Do not kill an enemy that a teammate has put to sleep just now. You are stealing his/her points but as well making your own team lose since he/she intented to fulton that said enemy.

Always shoot the red balloons. A red balloon means an enemy is trying to fulton a teammate. Ovoid that from happening by shooting the balloon down.

Ask for help when someone is trying to CQC you, interrogate you or fulton you! Press Q (by default) to ask for help. Spam that key until someone rescues you!

Don't let your bounty get too high. If the enemy team fultons you, all your kills will be added to the enemy team's score. To avoid that, try to fulton. That will lower your own bounty and add some nice points to your team's score in the process.

Cloak and Dagger

Cloak and Dagger is the equivalent to search and destroy in other multiplayer games. One team defends, the other team attacks. In this game mode death is permanent and you won't be able to respawn until the round ends.

The attacking team can only use non-lethal weapons and has stealth camo. The defending team, can only use lethal weapons and don't have stealth camo (other than the Stealth Camo.pp from infiltrators). The attacking team needs to steal one of the two data discs (A,B) and retrieve it to one of the two upload links. The defending team has to prevent that from happening. One team can win as well if all enemies are killed or stunned/put to sleep.

Important considerations in Cloak and Dagger

When attacking, don't fulton! It's very posible that the enemy you tried to fulton will be saved by his/her buddy, you will get killed and probably will cause other teammates to get killed as well in the 90% of the cases. If you stun an enemy and leave them there, another enemy player will come sooner or later to wake him/her up, which nullifies the points.

Don't sprint the entire map. That will cause the radar to show your position and give it away to the enemy. This is specially important when attacking.

Scouting and interrogation are useful if used properly. An infiltrator with interrogation+3 can give your team a HUGE advantage. Scouts that do their job properly can help as well in detecting the enemy while infiltrating for the discs.

Time is on the essence. Don't waste your time camping the map. Don't let the enemy flank you.

Pay attention to your surroundings at all times. Shadows, radar, sound... This game mode is the most simillar to MGSV gameplay, only that you play against other people, and of course, they are more intelligent most of the times than the AI :)

Comm Control

This game mode is the equivalent to domination in other multiplayer games. One team attacks and the other defends 3 comm links (A,B,C). The comm links look simillar to AA-radars from MGSV and they are surrounded by lights. Stay inside the area of those lights to capture a comm link. Once captured, you can leave said area and either defend the comm link you just captured, or move on to capture the next. The objective of the defending team is to prevent the attacking team from capturing the comm links. If the time runs out when attacking, your team will lose. The contrary will happen when defending since you need to hold the comm links and avoid data upload from happening.

Important considerations in Comm Control

There are 3 comm links, you don't need to go all together to the same comm link to capture it. It's essential to split up and cover the major part of the map.

Scouts are less important in this game mode since what matters is to capture and hold the comm links. A sniper loadout can be useful only when defending, never when attacking.

Try to fulton if you can and it's safe. Fultons reward a lot of points, which can help your team win in the end.

It's really helpful to set traps inside the comm links to prevent the enemy team from capturing them.

Sabotage

In Sabotage there are 2 terminals which control the magnetic field that protects the primary target: the missile. The attacking team must hack one of those terminals to deactivate the magnetic field and then fulton or destroy the missile. If the time runs out, the attacking team loses. Defenders must protect the terminals to avoid any kind of attempt on the missile. If the defending team fails to do so, they must protect the missile instead and shoot the red balloons if the enemy tries to fulton it. Nevertheless, the terminals must be hacked back again.

Important considerations in Sabotage

Maybe Sabotage is the game mode that requires the biggest focus on teamwork. Split up, coordinate, and defend/attack as a team. While someone goes for the missile, others have to hack/defend the terminals.

Focus on destroying the balloons if the enemy tries to fulton the missile while defending! But don't forget someone has to hack the terminal back as well.

Placed guns are really effective to defend the missile when the enemy tries to fulton it.

When attacking, defend the missile from enemies that try to blow the balloons.

Place traps on the terminals and fulton when possible, since that makes enemies to respawn in their base and will need more time to counterattack.
Survival introduction

This game mode it's not meant to be played solo. That said, the first thing you should do is team up with friends and make a party even before entering Survival menu. If you don't know anyone to play with, I advice you to first play the normal game and meet some people. When you have some friends, to make a party, press H or the back button while in freeplay in MGO.

Once you are in the survival screen, don't press ready until your team is fully ready. That means, don't press ready if you are ALONE. To begin with, you should have made a party PRIOR entering survival. If you haven't, wait until someone joins your room. THEN, and only then, you can press ready.

Once you press ready, your party will start searching for opponents. Once matched, the survival round will start.

Your objective is to win 5 games in a row without losing. If you lose, your streak resets. If you manage to win 5 times, you'll get some fine GP rewards and a rare color for your gear. The rewards changes each maintenance period (every tuesday).

The game modes featured are the same as the ones you can find in random automatch. That includes: Bounty Hunter (normal and rush), Cloak and Dagger (normal and rush), Comm Control (normal and rush) and Sabotage.

All advices previously given in the "game modes introduction" all applicable for Survival, but this is a competitive game mode, so expect more hardcore players in it.

Important considerations in Survival:

NEVER go to survival alone. You are making people waste their time.

By all means NEVER leave the game in Survival. This has caused Survival to lose many players due to the problems related to it and disconnections at the beginning. Konami has introduced a penalty in rank as a means to stop that from happening and has fixed disconnection issues almost completely. I won't say if it's too late for that... but never leave a game in Survival. By doing that, not only you are making your friends waste their time, you are going to get penalized with a rank decrease.
Epilogue

This guide was meant as means to help new players understand how to play MGO3 at the beginning, since Konami doesn't give a proper tutorial to anything related to MGO, not even in the MGSV website manual. That causes new players to play in a way that isn't supposed to be, killing stunned enemies, trying to kill enemies while they are being fultoned... etc. They simply don't know how to play because nobody taught them how to. I hope this has helped you and please, share it with any newcomer to MGO you meet.

Please, if you think I missed anything, help out by sharing your thoughts!

What chapter do I need to reach to even unlock this fucking game mode? There's no information about it anywhere.

Help me ! How exactly does the Wormhole fulton works in MG03 ?

I know you have to be close to your buddy to activate it, but once it's available how the hell do I use it? every time I extract a player, my character keeps extracting the opponent with normal fulton?

Do I need to develop it first? does it work for all classes?

Thanks, dude. I wrote this in 2016, when the game was still in good enough shape. Most of it is still relevant, but yeah, I've been meaning to update it, but the important bits of information are still up to date, so nah.
