Basics
You first learn how to tame familiars at the Dragon Knight Station in Brakarr Forest. This will get you a Brakarr Gallant. You will get the following interface while trying to tame a familiar.

The top 4 icons are used with WSAD when they light up to gain taming success. The bars show your taming progress on the familiar. If you fail, just try hoping back on if you can. Each attempt to tame a familiar uses it's respective taming point cost. You get 100 points per 24 hour period the resets with the server. You can also reset them yourself by leveling you character.

If a familiar has a book on it's icon in the bestiary, this will require you to have an item &/or perform a task in order to tame it. If it does not have a book, just jump on & hold on. The respective item is required for each taming attempt. Nearby hostiles shouldn't give you any trouble if you are taming in areas equal to or bellow your level, but it doesn't hurt to have someone watching your back especially when going after Elite & Heroic familiars.

Familiars & pets either made from familiars or unlocked from boxes can't level passed your level. They can only match yours until you level up at which point it can then level back up to equal your new level.

Any recipe that requires other familiars means you must use the proper Seal Stone on those familiars to get them as items to use in the recipe.

You are going to need a lot of Familiar Orbs to craft taming marks. The best way to get them is by going after the dungeon achievements. By the time you get all 6 achievements for just 1 dungeon, you can have 70+ doing low drop rate/easy difficulties after killing only what gets in the way. If you kill everything each run at the highest difficulty, you could make over 100. Numbers based on solo runs.

Tips

  • Lower HP of familiars to heighten chances of a successful taming. Best used for Elite & Heroic familiars.
  • Sneaking up behind hostile familars for a surprize tame works just as well from what I have seen.
  • If a familiar requires an item to tame it, consider bringing multiple ones incase you fail.
  • To tame flying familiars, shoot them down to your level with your crossbow. If they are flying too high to shoot down, you need to have your taming ability on your mount hotbar. Activate it & jump on.

Kellieth, (if thats is, sorry i cant read your tag) Keadin is the guy by the stables. He has a slight chance to drop the mark. By the time you can go into the manor on H2 or higher he drops loads of Destrier marks.

Omegazxxx, You have to get his health down way low before he lets you. Then you need the mark. Simple! ^ ^ Btw, the same rules apply to Terror Kerave (the massive freekin Ice dragon) if you plan on taming him, I dont think it says that in the guides in game.
