Added to the guide with credits as additional fix to try.
After searching and trying around I found that the dgVoodoo (available on the Dege's Stuff website) works best for me to prevent game crashes. And disabling HD Textures helped here too (btw you don't really notice that much of a difference so it's fine).

extract it to the game folder, open d3d9.ini and set:
ForceWindowedMode = 1
ForceWindowStyle = 1
Save changes
As a bonus you can also limit fps there since the game doesn't have one
