Basic Controls
To pick up items and read books, scrolls and letters, use the GRIP button on the LEFT-HAND controller. You learn spells by reading them in books.

To tell your health look at the runes on your hand. The number of runes equates the number of hit points you have left.

To summon magic, use the TRIGGER Button on the LEFT-HAND controller. You can draw magical glyphs with this, which will then cast spells if you have learned the spell.

To blink (teleport) hold the PAD on the LEFT-HAND controller. That will display a ray going to where you will teleport to. Release to teleport there. For best results, aim at the floor - aiming at a wall will tend to end up with your face stuck right up against that wall!

To slide (locomote) hold the PAD on the RIGHT-HAND controller (the staff). Then move the controller in space, forward, back, left or right- you will slide in the direction you moved your hand. Move your hand further to slide faster. You will need to ENABLE this option - do so in the opening area with the Left-Hand Path logo.

To view your grimoire bring your staff to your forehead. The grimoire will appear in front of you. As soon as you learn a spell or a ritual, it will appear in the grimoire. Flip through the grimoire's pages by grasping the turned corners at the bottom left or right of the grimoire and pulling them to the middle of the book. Do remember to read all the pages of the Grimoire!

To make the grimoire disappear raise your staff to your forehead again. It'll vanish.

To find out how many Husks you have open the Grimoire. There's a counter at the top right.

To swap to left-handed mode you can change mode in the opening area with the Left-Hand Path logo.

To fight back against monsters read through your Grimoire's pages - when you start the game you know the Vis spell, which will aid you...
Stuck? Here are a few answers.
If you're in a black place with no light try casting the Lux spell to illuminate the area.

If you can't get a spell to work check your grimoire for the glyph of the spell. The dot on the glyph shows where you should start the movement. The direction you draw in is important - drawing clockwise or drawing counter-clockwise will often produce different effects.

If you're looking for a save point Most important actions in the game persist - opening shortcuts, killing most bosses or key opponents, etc. You can also return to the Screaming Heads if you have encountered them throughout the world - if not, don't worry, you will soon..

If you want to reset your progress you can do that in the starter area with the Left-Hand Path logo. Look for the red writing offering that option. You can get to the starter area by restarting Left-Hand Path.

If you pick up a book and it's upside down try putting the book down and picking it up from another angle.

If the Grimoire won't go away raise your staff to your forehead. You need to use the front half or so of the staff - touch that to your forehead and the grimoire should vanish.

Getting killed and don't know how to fight back? Look up the "Vis" spell in your Grimoire.

SPOILERS BELOW

Rituals not working? You need to put the circle around yourself, THEN lower your staff flat to the ground. That will cause the compass directions to appear. Then you can draw the runes.

Hawthorne, the Low-Terror Mode in the settings increases the amount of light. That's the mode I play with, and it tones the terror down enough for me--I generally find horror games way too scary in VR, but I love this game and have played for about 23 hours so far.

There is also an "arachnophobe" mode for people who are scared of spiders. This mode was vital to me in a certain part of the game.

In case you didn't see the other recent threads, Nomad will not be responding as he unfortunately died unexpectedly earlier this month. It is a great loss to the VR community and all those who loved him.

@forda32 thanks for the heads up! (And sorry I didn't see this before). That's super weird and I will look into it.

What direction did your compass point? That'd help to know

Did everything perfect on the first ritual, except... the compass showed the wrong directions. Tried everything, even looked at playthroughs (they were 6 months old). Then I noticed that the playthrough's compass directions showed a different North than mine. I used their cardinal directions instead... and poof, it worked flawlessly. Might want to look into that...

@Tenebrious - sorry I took so long to answer this. Yes, there are "save points" of sorts - you'll find the first one shortly after the first boss. Glad you enjoyed it!

Is there a save feature or any checkpoints that mean you dont jump all the way back to the start?
Three of us played for the first time last night and had great fun despite a few little issues

Thanks for the guide Hugh. Though I knew everything else from my first half hour or so of gameplay, I was mostly checking to see if 'save points' were a thing. Glad to see that I left off right at one (screaming head)!

Anyways, wanted to say that I found the rest very intuitive, yet still immersive. Great game!

Thanks for the guide.. I got the game to support RPG Development, but it was too scary. Anyway to set an adjustment for the light? Even something as simple as letting me adjust the light of candles and torches.

I can't handle the creepy horror, but I LOVE The RPG dynamic and the spell casting.
