So the current state of the ultimate doom isn't very amazing for modern day PCs, but using the easy mod ZDOOM you can get any resolution you want (720p, 1080, 1440, etc), steam overlay, fully customizable graphic settings, free mouse look and more.

Introduction
So the current state of the ultimate doom isn't very amazing for modern day PCs, but using the easy mod ZDOOM you can get any resolution you want (720p, 1080, 1440, etc), fully customizable graphic settings, free mouse look and more. The installation is really simple and when you have it installed the way this guide says you will also be able to track your Steam hours in Ultimate Doom, while playing the better enhanced version with the Steam Overlay!
Installing ZDoom
Step 1: Go to your Ultimate Doom folder found in your SteamApps folder.
Step 2: Download ZDoom from the website http://zdoom.org/Download and extract the contents of the zip folder into the "base" folder found in the Ultimate Doom directory.
Step 3: Rename dosbox.exe to just "d" (no quotation marks) and rename zdoom.exe to "dosbox" (also no quotation marks).
Step 4: Launch The Ultimate Doom through Steam and it should launch the ZDoom version. Now you can customize your resolution and graphics to what you want! Play Doom in 1440p 144hz if you want! Hell even 4k!
Step 5: Have fun! :D

Credit to Steam user https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/id/the_dee_el for inspiring this guide. I found a post he made on the Steam Discussion explaining this, but it was on a small post and I thought I'd share it so it could get more recognition because this is the definitive way to play Doom.

I played through the first episode with grainy graphics to when I could barely tell where items were on the ground. now I got this and it a million times better dear lord Im so impressed. :steamhappy:Downloading everything and getting it in the right folder was sooooo easy but then when it came to actually finding the right settings it was a little funky but once I found my way through the settings and reconfigered the controlls I was as happy as could be. looks amazing!!! :steamhappy:even on fullscreen

@mikbhoy Did you download the correct Zdoom version and not the zdoom source code? The correct folder name is zdoom-2.8.1.zip. Windows doesn't show the file extension with the name in windows explorer but it still is an executable file just named zdoom.

I downloaded the current windows version just to check (in case I mis named the file name in this guide) and sure enough the zdoom.exe file was there in the folder.
