Common Cars

Grand Theft Auto 5 is not purely a driving game. If you have played other driving games, you will notice that GTA 5 has a lot of traction to almost every car. This means that if you're looking for a simple drift, just drive any car at a similar speed and you'll be able to pull off a moderately satisfyingly move.

The Karin Futo 'Drift King'

The Karin Futo can be found on the streets, spawning in car parks or being driven by an NPC.

What's special about the Futo is that it features extremely low traction. This means, give yourself a wide area and the Futo can drift like there's no tomorrow. Turning corners isn't exactly fast, but it sure looks cool.

Where to find The Karin Futo

Edit: You can now buy the Futo in Online! Find it on Southern San Andreas Super Autos for $9,000.

There is no certain "Always found here" location, but they have been known to commonly spawn around the mod shop near the LSIA (Los Santos International Airport).

Customising

For a car that is not even available to purchase, The Karin Futo has a great range of customisable options. Frolm several different bumper upgrades, all the way to the essential, unmissable Drift Spoiler. To add extra awesomeness to your screenshots, make sure to purchase a tyre smoke upgrade.

Where to drift
This all depends on the kind of drift that you want to do. A road with few traffic and lots of bendy corners, also some barriers would help too.

These sorts of areas are all around the map.

Large areas

The airport, sandy shores airfield or even the motorway are great examples of drifting paradise. Just reach the next corner/turning/junction and drift away!
How to Drift
For all you controller users reading, this is where the guide ends for you, as I will be explaining this in terms of a mouse and keyboard.

The common phrase for technique is "If you want to turn sharply, turn the other way"
Use this trick as you turn the corner.

Just before turning, press SPACEBAR (handbrake) and then turn in the direction that you are going to drift towards. Immediatly after pressing the A/D key, press and hold the opposite key (D/A). this should apply the drift.

The delay between the pressing of the handbrake and the initial turn depends on the car itself, and I can assure you that the Karin Futo is very different in terms of traction to any other car in the game. This you will have to work out for yourself.
Example
Below please find an example of me drifting the Karin Futo around the Airport.
Notice at 0:23 the front wheels are turned to the opposite way to the direction that I am turning.

Thank-you!

Downforce was introduced later on and is not a variable that is applied to the older cars like the Futo. Spoilers however do affect the center of gravity of the car and can help reduce oversteer, but this is almost unnoticable. Wheels DO affect how well you can go over bumps in the road, but only for some cars.

Thanks @FutoFist for the support and telling me that you can now buy the Futo, updated the guide for the first time since 2016 to add that in! :cozyspaceengineersc:

Added this guide into my own Futoism guide. You can buy the car from SSA auto (last two years) :waifu:

yeah my bad #2 seems to be incorrect, although idk if this is a recent change it may have been changed in one of the later physics patches.

Cheers for feedback, I was under the impression that wheel/tyre types do not affect handling though.

good guide, here are some things that are important to know
1. there is a glitch with spoilers on the futo: once you select one the down force cant be removed, even if you take it off, so don't put one on.

2. the best wheels for drifting are muscle wheels, the worst is tuner wheels.

3. dont put bullet proof tires on your drift cars, you cant stance your car with them.

4. here is a good video on how to set up a car for drifting , it shows a futo but there are LOTS of other cars that are great for drifting in GTA.

I never realized it wasn't able to be purchased. I simply saw it and thought "that looks like a Subaru Legacy" and simply took it to a garage I owned.

I think the downforce from spoilers actaully makes drifting harder, so you could remove the spoiler all together, however I'm not 100% sure so best test it for yourself :steerme: :rlmerc:
