Controls and gameplay basics
Spell Fighter VR requires HTC Vive[www.htcvive.com] virtual reality gear. It will not work with mouse or gamepad, it can only be controlled by HTC Vive motion tracked controllers.

What you can do in the game:

Cast spells - there are three ways:

  • use your voice. You can just say a spell (for example "summon fireball") and it will happen. Tu use that option, you need to use external program called Voice Attack[www.voiceattack.com]. Please see setup instructions in this guide.

  • use the spellbook - hold left controller MENU button to show spellbook. Choose a spell with your right finger.

  • use magic menus - simultaneously hold GRIP bulltons and TRIGGER on the same controller. This will show magic menu. While still holding, touch a spell icon you want to cast with the finger of the same controller.

Fight with swords - you can cut your enemies (you need to swing, just holding the sword without moving it will not hurt your enemies), and you can block enemies' cuts, by blocking their sword with yours.

Throw stuff - anything you can grab and hold, you can also throw. Pots, javelins, explosive flasks...

Command your minions (the wooden golems) - either:

  • a) talk to all of them using voice recognition ("everybody, follow me"), or individually, by pointing at the chosen golem and saying "hey you!" to select it. Then you can command the chosen golem by pointing your finger on the ground and saying: "go there", "go here", "stand here", "walk there", "come over here", "attack this guy", "kill him", "follow me".

  • b) You can also choose a "everyone follow me" command from your spellbook or magic menus.

Use other stuff in game - for example the laser skull or water of resurrection. Or bow.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so probably the best way to instantly understand how to play is by checking a gameplay video:

-----------------
Key bindings on Vive controllers:

  • Right Menu Button - open gameplay menu
  • Left Menu Button - open spell book. You can touch a spell in the book with your right finger (right controller) to activate it.
  • Left Trackpad -
    a) free walking mode - touch and move your finger on the trackpad to walk like with a gamepad thumbstick. Your whole room setup moves with you (can cause nausea!)
    b) teleporting mode - press and hold the trackpad and point on the ground. A marker will appear at the place you are pointing at and a "capsule" that moves to this marker. When you let go of the trackpad, you will teleport to that capsule's (not the marker!) position. The capsule can't pass through walls etc. You need to guide it through it's path.
  • Right Trackpad - press and hold to rotate. It's better to rotate physically in the real world though, but I left this just in case.
  • Triggers - hold to enable casting spells with voice (when you hold it, the game listens for spells). Please remeber that voice recognition has a delay. You need to keep holding the trigger for 0,2-0,5 second after you finished talking, because Windows Speech Recognition must make sure that you finished your command, and not just paused between words.
  • Grips - grab and hold movable objects in the game. Swords, pots etc.
  • Grip + Trigger - hold to summon a magic menu. While holding, move the controller to selet a spell icon.
Voice Recognition setup
To cast spells and command golems with your voice, you need to set up a voice recognition program first. This optional feature requires downloading and installing a very cool little program called Voice Attack. You can download it from here[www.voiceattack.com]. What it does is very simple - it simulates keyboard key press, when it hears a predefined command. For example, when you say "go there", Voice Attack presses "F" key.

Setup:

1. Turn on Voice Attack and import Voice Attack Profile. If you are using a free trial version of VoiceAttack, use SpellFighter_Lite-Profile.vap, it is limited to 20 commands. If you are using a full version, you can use SpellFighter_Full-Profile.vap, which has unlimited commands.

You can find both profiles in your Steam installation folder, for example:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Spell Fighter VR\VoiceAttackProfile\SpellFighter_Lite-Profile.vap

2. Go to your Windows Speech Recognition options (in Windows) and go through all the voice training and setup (it takes about 15 minutes to train Windows to recognize your voice, but you just have to do it once). Check the Voice Attack help[www.voiceattack.com] if you encounter problems.

3. Turn on Vive and controllers, configure your tracking space (room scale or standing, as you wish). Make sure the Vive built-in microphone is recording.

4. Play!

----------
Tip: you can customize all the commads you use in this game. Go to voice attack and click "Edit Profile" icon. Now you can re-type the commands to your preference or add even more of your own. They will work in the game, as long as they point to a proper key press.

Another helpful comment: The above link for voiceattack was down for me (as of August 18, 2016) So here's an alternative http://download.cnet.com/VoiceAttack-Speech-Recognition/3000-7239_4-75012421.html

A few words on VR nausea. Day one of owning the Vive I tried this game on non-teleportation mode. I took two steps in game and was immediately overcome with intense nausea that took two hours to fully go away. I did some reading and I found two things that help immensely: 1. You need to build a tolerance to VR, jumping into a game like this will mess you up. Take it easy with lighter games first for a while (fruit ninja VR, Skeet VR target shooting etc.) 2: I found walking/jogging in place IRL while moving in this game helped me IMMENSELY. Give it a try!
