Winter Holiday Mod
Before you can do ANY of the ♥♥♥♥ in this guide, you first need to turn on the "Winter Holiday" mode manually.

This can be done by opening SPAZ, and before clicking Play, first go to Mods. Click the dropdown, and select "WinterHoliday". This will enable the mode you'll need for this guide.
Basics
Once you've enabled Winter Holiday, you might be asking, "Why is this a grind? It's just graphical changes."

WRONG.

In this mode, enemies have a small chance of dropping milk and cookies (the bigger and badasser the better) which summon Santa. He'll eat the cookies and drop a bunch of UTA Supply crates (presents) and if you feed him enough, he'll start dropping Little Helpers.
These guys are ridiculous specialists, starting at lvl 50 and increasing by 1 each time you throw one out the airlock and get a new one from good ol' Claus (yes, you can only have one at a time).
They will have randomly generated skills and traits. The grind here is, they give a lot of data for retiring them. And they increase by level each time you get one, so you'll just keep getting more and more.
The Grind Strategy
So now you know how it works. Here's the strategy (but it's pretty obvious)

  • Kill a few ships
  • KOOKIE
  • Santa
  • repeat a few times
  • Specialist drop
  • Retire
  • repeat
there you go. that's how to level fast and gain good specialists at the same time. have fun.

They don't drop at 99 for me. First was 26, second 42.

don't look at spaz period if you're not into grinding. speaking as someone who thought "masochist" was an annoying achievement .. until I realized what "arena champion" really meant. :/ (and that's my last one left. I'm about half way done and it's questionable I'll ever finish it.)

might have made masochist easier if i knew about, and used this mod, but ... then again it might not cuz really it _was_ just a grind and skill left the picture long ago.

For anyone that sees this in the future the specialist now drop as level 99 right from the beginning.
