INR The Scharnhorst and Bismark class battleships had an armor scheme known as "turtleback." This allowed them to "shrug off" a lot of damage, and generally made them able to take far more hits than many would expect. For example, Tirpitz survived a ludicrous amount of bombs (several of the IRL Lancaster Grand Slams) while it was stationed as an AA platform in Norway. The German battleships had notoriously poor AA though (at least Bismark did, I am less sure about Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, and Tirpitz).

The real Bismark survived HUNDREDS of Royal Navy shells...this is pretty realistic.
